This is a machine for enthusiasts, not those who are afraid to open the case. Built with top of the line off the shelf components, the upgrade path should make this computer last for years and years.
I've noticed that these boxes tend to get overclocked after they ship, and I'm guessing that that may be the reason Alienware has such hard return policies that other reviewers complain about. Once you start overclocking a system, there are many reasons that the box can fail-- most of them that have nothing to do with the quality of parts of manufacturing.
My old Dell XPS 700t has been very reliable, but is boring and difficult to upgrade without buying Dell motherboards and stuff. My machine was ordered on 1/22/02 and delivered on 2/7/02-- 16 days or 12 business days. I'm a happy camper.
I just love my Alienware computer! From its ruby red motherboard, to the awesome case to the little alien decal on the mouse-- what an incredibly fast machine. While not cheap, the quality is there. My only complaint is the cheesey, cheap keyboard they ship with the system. I replaced mine after only a couple of days.
