I booked a flight via priceline's name your own price 3.5 weeks prior to my departing date. I must mention how difficult this was in itself. They kept telling me my offer was accepted but once i clicked to pay I was told that my offer wasn't accepted as blah, blah, blah frequently changes.
I scheduled the flights they OFFERED me as back up options, put in my cc info and it rejected my itinerary at the check-out page atleast 7 times, causing me to pick a new itinerary they personally selected each time. I ended up paying pretty freaking close to standard ticket prices.
As with any flight booking site, expedia, hotels.com, travelocity, and orbitz (all of which i've used multiple times) there is the warning that all tickets are non refundable, non transferrable, $150 cancellation fee, blah, blah, etc etc. This is until you get to the portion where they begin to offer you 100% travel protection including cancellations or flight changes. So, I decide to spend my $16 for that added security and what do you know, I needed it.
2 days later I got into an accident and had a crown knocked out causing severe pain. I'm without dental insurance so I knew i'd have to postpone my trip in order to pay for the surgery. I call priceline explaining my position and i was met unsympathetically with a, "no refunds". I was livid. I told the woman i paid for insurance and this should fall under the guidelines of "unforeseen illness". The customer service agents are obviously international, read from a script, and no friendly frills. She said there's nothing she can do because i booked "name your own price". She offered no further suggestions, no nothing, so i hung up on her.
I call back 20 minutes later and get another guy who tells me that they need the name and number of my dentist(!!) and/or doctor's note stating that i won't be able to make the flight. AND, i'd be charged the $150 cancellation fee. wtf? he tells me i can take up the $150 with the insurance company. OK, whatever, better than no refund at all. I'm away from everything during this call so i state that i have to call back when i have the information on hand. Oh and if my surgery wasnt scheduled between date of departure and return then i wouldn't be warranted any refund at all.
I call back later with the information ready to give and surprise, surprise the new guy tells me NOT EVEN A PARTIAL REFUND. wow...when i've changed flights with travelocity and expedia w/ their insurance i NEVER experienced this. They quickly changed my flights without any hassle. So, I go back and forth with this guy, asking to speak to someone else(who puts me on hold frequently) and finally we're back to my $150 loss after another 20 minutes. I give him my dentist's name/number and he says they will process the refund in 1 business day but may not post for 5 days.
Yes, they have my $150 dollars but they will NEVER get my business again. I would've gladly paid extra to have my flight moved a month down the road but the people were so curt and rude about it all, still unable to answer basic questions I had regarding their policy...full of responses akin to, "because we said so". Now, I have to deal with filing a claim with the insurance company for my lost $150.
I took my business to expedia and booked a flight for $100 less than name your own price!! AND it's during labor day weekend...go figure. Now, Priceline and unfortunately United are out of a customer.
