The Bottom Line Troll Song is a freeware adventure game series I'm writing, here's some information about it.
I thought it was about time to introduce the Epinions world to a new freeware adventure game series - my own! One day I got to thinking about what sort of characters haven't been exploited very much in adventure game scenarios - pirates, spacemen, detectives, aliens etc have all been done repeatedly. Then I wondered if there had ever been an adventure game that put you in the role of a troll - maybe there has been, but I couldn't think of one. Also I'd recently read Mathion: Book One of the Mavonduri Trilogy, which seeks to establish an entirely new mythology for werewolves. That made me think that trolls are a rather chronically under-written species - they're just portrayed as strong, dumb brutes all the time. What if that wasn't really what trolls were like? What if they use uncomplicated language, yes, and are incredibly strong, but also have feelings not all that dissimilar to ours? (I mean, even Hulk was given more characterisation sometimes...) That was the beginning of the idea for the Troll Song saga. So, after enlisting the help of a programmer and artist I'd already worked with, and getting a musician on board, I've started to get my ideas into shape and slowly they're turning into an adventure game - or to be more precise, and adventure game series. Without giving too much away, the basic storyline revolves around a plot by an alchemist to destroy the entire troll race. The motivation goes back to something that happened at the very dawn of the trolls' existence... but for now all we need to know is that the player character, Clod, is given a chance to save himself and the troll race. Later on he'll team up with a hobgoblin, who is also an outcast, as they find out that the plot involves far more than the future of the trolls alone... No specific release date as yet, I'm probably looking at halfway through 2012 for the first episode to come out (many other projects being worked on simultaneously by myself and Tino, my programmer / artist), but work is in progress. You can check the latest happenings on the development blog: www.troll-song.com Despite the fact that we're both working on a major adventure game that you're definitely going to hear a lot about in the (hopefully not too distant) future if you're interested in adventure games - The Journey of Iesir - and have a load of other projects, we're working on some techniques to aid rapid development (i.e. it's going to be fully voiced, which normally takes ages to get sorted out, but I'm going to voice all the characters myself, which will speed things up greatly - not to mention it will be a lot of fun!). So hopefully we'll be able to keep to the plan of getting episode one, "Completely Stoned", released by June 2012. |
