I'm a solo praticioner lawyer, and after being disappointed with the expense and other practices of traditional vendors, decided to give Stamps.com a try.
There are a couple of cautions before going further. The service is not cheap because of the monthly service fee, but becomes quite worthwhile if you have to do a lot of mailings. It is definitely a lot cheaper and less hassle than having a commercial postage meter.
If you only mail 2-3 pieces per week, it's probably not for you. If it saves your staff three-four hours a month, you probably have been well compensated for investing in their products.
The service works out very well for me. After a few months, I upgraded not for the heavier scale, but for the ability to do certified mail and return receipts right on the spot hand in hand with writing the letter.
First, the software is very intuitive and easy to use, although there have been a minor "glitch" or two that caused me to have to call technical support. Support was courteous, knowledgeable, and in good American English.
There are 3 different service plans for various users -- one difference being the top-tier comes with a 25-lb capacity electronic scale rather than the 5-lb available with the other plans.
The top-tier plan allows you to print full certified and certified mail with receipts and postage on their labels at one time. Labels are clearly printed and work well with my HP printer. In addition, the software keeps a record of what you've mailed and the certificate number. The time it saves in fiddling with return receipts alone pays for it monthly.
Their labels are all high-quality, but they are commensurately priced. Other companies such as Avery also sell products for Stamps.com software to use.
Their website could be a bit clearer about which labeling products work with which mail products, but I've had no problem returning their product for credit when I needed. All of their labels have worked well with my HP Inkjet printers, and produce a very professional looking result. In addition, you can use their software to address your envelopes (or mailing labels) without using the postage feature, which might use up some of those old postage stamps lying around in your desk drawer.
