My favorite Scotch
Written: Feb 18 '02
The Bottom Line: A smoky, salty old friend.
Laphroaig (pronounced "La Froyg") is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Isle of Islay. The ten year old variety is fairly commonly available in U.S. liquor stores and currently runs about $35 a bottle (2002 prices).
This is a VERY smoky Scotch, by far the smokiest I've ever encountered, the peat smoke flavor being accompanied by what can only be described as a faintly salty flavor not unlike the smell of the seaside. The taste is beguiling and, despite the smokiness, filled with subtle and refined flavors.
Although I find Laphroaig quite smooth for a whisky only ten years old, it's bold taste is not for everyone. Indeed, one of my best friends, an enthusiastic whisky drinker, finds it unpalatable, yet my wife and I love it.
I heartily recommend Laphroaig as a single-malt that really stands out. Far too good to be mixed, try it straight or, perhaps with just a hint of water. I think you'll find it warming and welcoming. I know I have.
