The Bottom Line My annual personal challenge of August movie viewing
I guess I could also call this my own personal exercise in vanity posting, but I decided to go ahead and write about this here for a few reasons. As I’ve stated quite a few times since I joined Epinions, Turner Classic Movies is easily my favorite channel on the cable box. Every August, TCM presents its Summer Under the Stars feature, where every day for 31 days, a different actor or actress has their films shown uncut and commercial-free for 24 consecutive hours. For a classic film fan like me, it is the highlight of my movie viewing year. I became so enthralled with the spectacle of the feature that two years ago I made myself a personal challenge; I was going to watch one movie a day that I had never seen before. This way, I figured that not only would I be opening myself up to performers I was unaccustomed with, but I would also be forcing myself to look past the more well-known works of the bigger stars and look for some of their lesser gems I’d never previously seen. Alas, with work and a family I found myself unable to complete the challenge two years ago. Disappointed but unwavering, I decided to give it another try last year, this time giving myself an extra month to catch up on missed days by recording movies in advance (thank goodness for the invention of the DVR). I completed my challenge and introduced myself to a couple new artists I was previously unfamiliar with. This year, I am once again going to try to complete my personal challenge. I was considering trying to make it into some sort of write-off, but I was unsure what kind of interest there might be, so I decided to make this all about me for one more year and see if there was any kind of response or interest. My hope is that by putting this here not only will I be able to track my own progress for the future, but I’ll also be able to force myself to write more movie reviews, which I have been woefully behind on as of late. So, from today until September 15th (my own personally imposed timeframe), every time I watch a movie I’ve never seen before from one of TCM’s 31 Stars, I’ll put it here. Once I post a review for the movie, I’ll post a link for the film as well. Here are the stars of the month in August: 1. John Wayne - Allegheny Uprising 2. Myrna Loy - The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer 3. Johnny Weissmuller - Tarzan, The Ape Man 4. Marilyn Monroe - Bus Stop 5. Claude Rains - The Invisible Man 6. Van Heflin - Act of Violence 7. Sidney Poitier - A Raisin in the Sun 8. Rita Hayworth - You Were Never Lovelier 9. Toshiro Mifune - The Drunken Angel 10. Lionel Barrymore 11. James Mason - The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel 12. Ginger Rogers 13. Deborah Kerr 14. James Cagney - Each Dawn I Die 15. Lillian Gish 16. Elvis Presley 17. Katharine Hepburn - Morning Glory 18. Freddie Bartholomew 19. Eva Marie Saint 20. Anthony Quinn 21. Kay Francis 22. Jack Lemmon 23. Gene Kelly 24. Irene Dunne 25. Tyrone Power 26. Gary Cooper 27. Jeanette Macdonald 28. Ava Gardner 29. Ingrid Bergman 30. Warren William 31. James Caan Personally, I’d love comments on if anyone would be interested in joining a month long movie write-off featuring a set list of film actors and actresses to choose from, only writing about films they are watching for the first time. I also would love to here if people think this entire challenge of mine is ridiculous… |
