Pros:Great picture quality, High pixel clock, Good 1600x1200 support, 2048 x 1536 "support"
Cons:Picture quality requires hours of tuning, Above 1600x1200 looks pretty bad, FedEx Ground
The Bottom Line: Sweet quality picture-catch is that you have to tune it! Sensitive to FedEx/UPS and also to electromagnetic radiation so keep your PC away from it.
I ordered this monitor in August 2001 for a new computer system I was building. At the last minute someone told me that I should invest in a nicer monitor as it would be something that you keep for years. Taking this to heart I decided to spring for a nicer monitor but one that still wouldn't break my wallet.
I managed to buy this monitor for about $240(which was a really great deal) so I was pretty happen when it arrived.
The picture initially wasn't properly converged or focused. It took hours of staring at the screen and making sure all 4 corners had the focus properly distributed and everything was tuned correctly.
Unlike most other monitors I've owned, it was almost like they didn't bother to tune this at the factory. With fixed setting monitors they at least tune it so you can use it. With the 900NF they pretty much just didn't do anything and left it all up to the end user. If you're impatient or can't really tell the difference with slight focus adjustments this might be a problem(get someone who's a techy to do it lol)
The high pixel clock(240Mhz) allows it to achieve good refresh rates even at high resolutions like 1600x1200. This is good because it's actually usable at 1600x1200!
I still prefer to run it at 1280x1024 simply because I use video a lot on my PC and dvds don't really like the higher resolutions due to some aspect ratio problem and the video ram needed to overlay the picture.
Nonetheless even at 1600x1200 the text is crisp and readable(if you tune it!) and it's quite usable.
However on the downside, this monitor suffers from some serious problems too:
I shipped the monitor FedEx ground to my college dorm and even took the time to write FRAGILE all over my box, but it arrived and then I realized the monitor would squeak VERY loudly and at a high pitch when it was set to certain resolution and refresh combinations. This problem has since subsided(but it took 4 months!) and although I can push fedex for a reimburstment to let samsung check this out(I just don't want to pay shipping for something that's not my fault) it's just a great hassle.
Thus, I realize 2 things from this, 1 is that FedEx Ground really doesn't care about the Fragile tag. 2 is that this monitor is quite sensitive to being banged around, so be gentle with it.
Also, it's quite sensitive to electromagnetic interference. When placed next to my PC the colors get very distorted. It's just more sensitive than the average monitor in almost all respects.
Since it's a monitor that just sits there, this really isn't that big of a deal in my opinion. Just don't let FedEx or UPS touch it ;) (well no more than you have to have it shipped to you).
All in all though, I've been happy about having this monitor especially for such a great price. The support wires(those couple dark lines that run through the perfectly flat surface) are pretty thin compared to some other screens since it uses a Mitsubishi Natural Flat screen and the CRT itself seems great. No noticable corner distortion for me, although it took a LOT of tuning to get the corners just right.
Still, a great bargain for me and I just love it.
