Great book with which to learn C!
Written: Feb 26 '02
Pros:Well-written, logical presentation order, many solutions for self-teaching.
Cons:None
The Bottom Line: Great for the self-learner or coursebook. Well worth the investment in time and money. As a professional and former student, I highly recommend it.
Ah, the venerable language C. I knew her well, so many years ago. The language is still in use today, though its popularity has been superceded by C++ and Java.
A friend wanted to know if this was a good book to use to self-learn C. I've thumbed through it, some chapters I read entirely. I am well-versed in C, but some of the details have gone fuzzy. This book brought those details back to their prior sharpness (and beyond in some cases). It serves as an excellent "freshener" if you're starting a new project in C and haven't used it in a while.
Pointers On C is the best book I've seen in recent years to learn C from, whether self-taught or used as a coursebook. It takes the best approach: building a strong knowledge of the use of pointers. The knowledge you learn here can be used in C++, an extension of C. An excellent reference to go along with this book would be "The C Programming Language" (2nd. ed.). by Kernighan and Ritchie (the developers of the language).
This book is not meant for most beginners to programming, and it states on the back cover, "Designed for professionals and advanced students". Chapter 1 is written to a broad audience of near beginners to professionals who have never written in C. If you're a determined individual, and most people who like to program are, lack of any programming experience should not present a problem.
