| stewie24's Full Review: FIFA Soccer 2002 for GameCube |
let us begin with a slightly less than positive comment about the sport. i find it boring as anything to watch, which usually doesn't make you want to go out and purchase a video game. although, in this case, i would like to thank my soccer nut friend that asked me to give the game a try.
first of all, with just about every game that has been released on the gamecube, the game graphics are amazing. from the players, to the close up celebration when a goal is scored, to the game to game weather situations, they surpass any soccer game that has every been made.
when you play your first game you understand right away the potential this game has for the user. the controls are very very basic. there aren't a lot of weird button moves to cause the user to pull his hair out trying to learn them all. it's like A=kick B=pass etc. it's one of those games you can pick it up, and by the end of the first game you feel very comfortable. there are some things that i started to pick up later in the week after many long night sessions(such as the give and go pass, etc) but those aren't needed right away. another plus is that when you open up to the game it shows the graphical power of the system. from the sunny day game, to the rainy night game under the lights. it's amazing the differences the graphics can show. although, i do think that there should be a difference in game play when it is raining compared to when it is sunny, but that is just me the observer. when i finally did score my first goal, and it took me two games(no laughs, i sad i wasn't a soccer man) the celebrations we unbelievable. from the players detail, to the comedy of the players running around diving on the ground.
as i mentioned earlier, i'm not much of a soccer nut, nor do i know much about the sport except the basic rules, but this game does a great job of letting the user play the game rather than have a bunch of fouls and hard to understand controls. it's all about just running around and kicking the ball towards your net. sorry for all you soccer fans. that description was horrible, but for us nonsoccer folk, that's the best way to describe it.
the game options are the only part that i found to be frustrating. i went through a whole season with ac milan(yes, once again, i suck at soccer so i needed someone good) and when the season was over, i expected to move on to the next season and keep going(like a franchise mode) but there isn't any such option with this game. it has season and tournament. a plus that many people may not pick up is that a season doesn't take up a whole memory card like many games. so you don't have to totally kill a memory card just to save your season. another side note is that the soundtrack is kind of nice too. you can listen to some decent tunes while you play, instead of hearing feet pounding on the grass.
as i was saying in my cons, it does show how bad the mls actually is, and that anyone that can play soccer does it overseas. i wish that some of the talent that was on that side of the sea, would come over here, and i believe the game would be a much better sell, but until then, please give this game a try. whether you are a soccer fan or not, it has great play and replay value. i do warn you of one thing, be careful not to end up like myself and start yelling goooooaaaal everytime you score.
