| dd3james's Full Review: Epson Stylus Photo 820 Inkjet Printer |
I purchased this printer based on its' borderless abilities. I'm a Graphic Designer who likes to print some of my work for the purpose of putting it directly into my portfolio. When I went to Fry's Electronics to purchase the printer, it was very difficult trying to find out from the staff if it actually printed borderless or not. I took a chance, mainly because of the $50.00 rebate that is still going on as of 3-01-02.
Well, I got my rebate and the printer works great! It prints borderless 8.5x11 prints on photo paper, up to 2880 dpi. The software allows you to adjust everything from the color including sepia and monochrome, to adjusting the sharpness and tone. The color monitor lets you know just how many additional pages you can print considering the current settings and amount of ink.
There is a USB port directly built on the printer that allows me to print from my Apple Powerbook G4 straight to the printer (Mac and PC compatible).
One of the down sides of the printer is it's ink consumption. I only have a few pieces to show for the consumption of two color cartridges since January, and halfway through my 2nd black ink cartridge. I like to buy compatible ink for the lower price instead of shelling out almost $30 for one Epson Color cartridge, but, the Epson printer knows when you're not using Epson ink and subsequently warns you that the quality may not be the same. They're right! If I go for a couple of days without printing something, I have to clean the nozzle, which consumes even more ink. I'm actually considering using my old Stylus Color 440 for daily use, and only use the 820 for my portfolio pieces.
If you are a person who prints allot of files from the internet where high quality is not issue, I would not recommend this product because of the ink consumption. If you are a person who will utilize small quantities of high quality prints then this printer is for you.
