I've had nothing but great experiences with Priceline either in terms of rental cars or hotels. Some of the reviews here are laughable because the reviewers don't understand that rules that they are agreeing to and then complain about them. A good chunk of the complaints are also against the hotels and not Priceline. I can't speak for the customer service folks, but it sounds like they are just re-iterating the rules that customers agreed to and then complained about.
I've stayed at great hotels all over North America for a fraction of the price of published rates. The first thing that you need to understand is that Priceline bids are only for rooms that can accommodate 2 people. Not 4 or 5, but 2. If you need a room that will hold more than 2 people, you need two rooms unless the chain that you happen to get can change your room. Second, don't bid on anything below 2.5 stars. Even 2.5 stars is pushing it some times because some locations don't keep up standards between rooms.
Rental cars couldn't be easier...just pick a price per day and you're good!
If you bid 50-75% of the going rate you can be sure to almost always win. I've paid $75 for 4* hotels like Intercontinental & Hilton in many cities. How can I complain about that?
