Dead at six months.

Written: Mar 09 '02 (Updated Sep 11 '02)
Pros:None.
Cons:This brand has an apparent propensity to fail within six months.
The Bottom Line: Do not buy this motherboard. In my experience, it fails within half a year.

I got my first K7T Pro motherboard in October of 2000 in a bundle package along with a case and a 750 MHz Athlon processor. I migrated my drives, cards and RAM from my older system to it, and it all seemed to work just fine.

Approximately six months later, while I was reading a web page on the machine, the screen suddenly went black on me. Neither ctrl-alt-del nor the manual reset switch would reboot the machine. The power button didn't work either. I reached back and turned the power supply off, and turned it back on again. All four of the motherboard's 'D-LEDs' remained red. Not even the video card's BIOS screen showed up.

Thinking this might have been a fluke, I took the motherboard back to where I bought it, a PC Club store in Westwood (I live in Los Angeles). They were nice and took the motherboard and were going to repair it for free, but I would be without a computer for several weeks. I decided to buy a second motherboard then, which was a K7T Pro-2A.

About six months after I got that new motherboard, it too failed in exactly the same way as the old one did. By now I had the repaired K7T Pro sitting in its box, and so I simply switched them. It is the K7T Pro motherboard I am using now, but I fear that in a few months time, my screen is going to go black again.

UPDATE: As of September 1, 2002, the fixed K7T Pro motherboard died once again, in the exact same way as described above and of course, without any warning.

I've since replaced it with a Soyo KT333 Dragon Lite.
