| fireballdw's Full Review: InterAct Playstation Dex Drive |
The Dex Drive is probably one of the best values ever as far as electronics purchases. I found out about it while looking on Amazon.com for memory cards for the Playstation. Third party companies manufacture their own memory cards, some with lots more than 15 spaces (the standard). I was reading the reviews, and every single one said that the product was unreliable, and it would lose save games. A few reviews said that something called the Dex Drive was much better, and cheaper. That piqued my interest and I found out about it. The rest, is history.
To put it simply, with the Dex Drive, you only ever need one memory card with your Playstation. The Dex Drive hooks up to the serial port on your PC, and the accompanying software lets you transfer games to and from your memory card.
Benefits:
The most obvious benefit is that it gives you unlimited storage space. If your card gets full, you can just dump it to your hard disk, and then clear it off. Or, if you have an old game on your memory card that you don't anticipate playing much in the future, you can dump it and clear it off.
The second benefit is that you can take these memory card files and upload them to the net, or download other files that people have made. There are lots of archives of these game files on the net (such as gamefaqs.com).
The third benefit is that even if you never anticipate using more than one memory card, the Dex Drive is perfect for backing up your files. If the memory card ever got damaged or lost, you could easily replace the files onto a new memory card.
The fourth benefit to the Dex Drive is the price. A Sony memory card costs $15. You can get third party cards for a little cheaper or with increased capacity, but they have a tendancy to fail a lot. The Dex Drive is only $10. InterAct could EASILY charge two or three times that amount and it would STILL be a great bargain.
Installation and Use:
Installation is very easy to do. You just hook a cable into your serial port (9-pin, virtually all computers have one), plug the AC adapter in, run the software which comes on two 3.5 inch floppies, and you're ready to start copying your memory card files! If for some reason you ever loose the installation software, you can find it online easily enough.
The program is equally easy to use. It has a nice interface, with large buttons at the bottom that tell you what you can do:
Backup (copy from memory card to disk)
Restore (copy from disk to memory card)
Duplicate (copy from one memory card to another, which is something the Playstation will do for you already)
Re-Format (erase a memory card, which is also something the Playstation will do for you)
E-Mail (opens up your E-Mail program and attaches a game file)
Delete (throw out one of the files)
When the program is active, the LED on the Dex Drive is green, and when the program is accessing the memory card, the LED is yellow. This is helpful in knowing when you can take your memory card out safely.
Also, if you already have one of the third party memory cards, the Dex Drive will work with it. It also supports one of the increased memory cards, the Massive Memory Card 1440.
Summary:
Everyone with a Playstation and more than a handful of games should definitely purchase this right now. It's great if you need more storage space, but it's also great if you just want to keep reliable backups of your files -- especially if you already own a third party card!
