| ebookguy's Full Review: RCA REB1100 |
I purchased a RCA REB 1100 ebook reader several months ago. It stopped working two weeks after I purchased it. I returned the broken device to the company that RCA contracted to do warranty service: Decision
One. Approximately 2 weeks passed and I received a replacement, a *banged up*; refurbished unit (the unit had a large *refurbished* tag affixed to the back, the original serial number was cut away and a refurbished serial number tag was pealing off where it had been pasted in). Three days later the refurbished unit stopped working also. I
contacted Decisionone and stated that I needed an immediate
replacement because I purchased the ebook to take with me on vacation and was going to leave on vacation in approximately one week. They said that they would send out a replacement immediately and I could return the broken unit in the same box after the replacement arrived.
In fact the replacement unit wasnt shipped to me until after I departed on my vacation and arrived at my home over a week after I departed. So I never did get to take the ebook on vacation, which is one of the most important reasons I purchased it. After returning from vacation, and upon inspection of the 3rd ebook I discovered that the
screen color is green. These units are touted to have a paper white screen for a pleasurable reading experience, just like real ink on real paper, not a green screen like an old monochrome computer monitor. The first two ebooks had paper white screens, but this third unit definitely has a defective screen. Ive since contacted Decisionone, gemstar and RCA/Thompson numerous times and told them
that this 3rd ebook has a defective screen but they do not respond to me and don't seem to care about customer satisfaction at all. I cannot read the ebooks that I purchased for this unit, nor can I read Money magazine, The Wall Street Journal or the New York Times, the subscriptions to which, are rapidly expiring. These electronic subscriptions and the electronic books I purchased can only be read with an ebook registered in my name (its some sort of copyright protection feature built into the ebook), so I have no way to read my electronic magazines or electronic books.
I advise all consiering the purchase of an ebook reader to stay away from these defective Thompson/RCA units. RCA/Thompson was very clever in subcontracting out its warranty services through Decsionone when they realized that these are defective. RCA says "there is nothing we
can do, you will have to contact Decsionone" RCA/Thompson is taking no responsibility for their defective products.
If you see one of these REB 1100 or 1200 models, I advise you to throw your arms in the air and run from the room screaming at the top of your lungs. You will find the experience much more satisfying then owning one of these e-craplets.
