They Had the Specialty Battery I Needed -- Home Depot
Jun 19, 2012
The grass is growing like it will never stop, and my battery-driven lawnmower quits working. No matter of cajoling will convince it to work more than a few seconds at a time. Thankfully, Home Depot online carried the specialty batteries I needed to purchase. No one else in theUnited States did!
What They Sell
Home Depot online is like a version of the brick-and-mortar big-box store. The website carries a huge variety of merchandise. As a sample, some of their departments include: Appliances,Bath, Building Materials, Decor, Electrical, Flooring, Kitchen, Outdoors, Paint, Storage and Organization, Tools and Hardware.
Navigating the Site
The top of the Home Page announces: Free Shipping (with an asterisk), Free In Store Pick Up, Free Returns (with two asterisks). The first asterisk means you have to spend over $45.00 for the free shipping on most orders – Why can’t they be upfront about it, rather than hide the information on another page? If an order needs returning, it can be taken to a Home Depot store location. Read the returns page, though, since there are rules and some limitations.
A navigation plane on the left lists the various departments. Rest the cursor on one of the departments for more detailed selection. An example is the Lighting and Fans department. Rest the cursor on the department name. These are some of the options that appear: Ceiling Lighting, Chandeliers, Track Lighting, Post Lights, Indoor or Outdoor Ceiling Fans, Light Bulbs, Work Lights.
Much of the Home Page is filled with suggested products to purchase. At the bottom are lots of links to various Home Depot departments, includingCustomer Serviceand Project How-To links.
There is also a Search Box. I typed in “battery”, and over 100 results came back. I changed the search to “Linamar Battery”. Even though this is the company name, no results showed. I changed it to search “Epic Battery”, the brand of the lawnmower also returned zero results (however, the Solaris battery was listed in “suggested items” beneath the results – different model mower, same company, and the mowers use the same battery). When I typed in the model number of the battery, the page opened to exactly what I wanted to purchase.
Let’s Go Shopping!
I knew I needed to purchase two batteries since the lawnmower uses two batteries at a time to power it. The page featuring the batteries conveniently sold them as a 2-pack with a price of $99.00. The product photo looked exactly like the batteries currently in the mower. A zoom feature allowed me to view the product in close enough detail to read the writing on the battery cases. A note said the product could not be shipped to Alaska or Hawaii.
A brief description included the brand name, manufacturer model and part numbers. The specification table provided additional information including the battery size and that it had a 30-Day return policy. The page also included a number of consumer reviews of the product.
Since I was sure this was the product I needed to buy, I pressed the button to add it to the Cart. The next page offers the opportunity to change quantity or to remove the item. There is also an area to change the shipping address. Scroll down the page a bit to view an area where a promotional code can be entered. If you need help, a section on the page offers Live Chat as well as toll-free phone numbers.
The page shows a summary of the order. Since the battery was over the $45.00 amount to qualify for free shipping, the word FREE was prominently displayed in the shipping cost area. When done with this page, click the “Checkout Now” button (or you can continue shopping).
Checkout is simple. You can set up an account, or checkout as a guest. You must provide your email address before leaving the page, though. It is needed to email the order information. Fill in the billing and shipping address info. A phone number is also required. The next page allows changing of the shipping option. My choices were: Standard (3-5 days free), 2-Days ($35.96), 1-Day ($47.28).
Home Depot accepts: American Express, Discover, Mastercard, Visa, PayPal, Home Depot Consumer or Commercial cards. The card security ID is required.
I received an email order confirmation the next day, which included a summary of the order and a toll-free phone number. Two days later, I received an email containing shipping confirmation with a UPS tracking number.
Shipping and Delivery
Being eager to mow my lawn, I repeatedly checked the provided tracking number. The UPS website was frustrating since at no time did it divulge an estimated arrival date. The website tracked my package from location to location as it moved, but never did it give an estimated delivery date.
It was also aggravating that when the box did arrive within the week time-frame … UPS dropped it at the door without knocking or ringing the bell. Especially annoying since we had some rain. When I discovered the box outside my door the next morning, it was very damp but not soaked. The batteries were packed inside the simple corrugated box. The packaging could have been sturdier for the heavy contents. There was one small piece of bubble-type wrap, but it was more for looks than function. The batteries were not wet.
I would order from Home Depot as needed even though I was not happy with the shipper. Since this is my only option to buy replacement batteries in theUnited States (the lawnmower company is inCanada), this is where I will shop for them.
I hope you found this review useful.
