BMG Music Services Online Store Spells SCAM by jo.com | Mar 20 '02 I am sorry I have to write this review. During the 2+ years I have written for epinions I have come across companies that behave unethically, companies that misrepresent what they sell or do and in the case of BMG a company that purposely misled me....Return to opinion

Re: Just saved me a whole lotta frustration (Reply to this comment)

You are welcome though I must say that I took a look at their latest brochure - which still comes to me - it's amazing. I write this scathing review and you'd think they'd hear about it or something. In any case I asked someone else about it thinking this was such a good deal and should I try it again and she said that although she didn't have the same problem I did there were some issues with their saying she hadn't fulfilled my contract, etc. etc. so maybe re: the out and out misleading tactic that they did when I wrote the review they have gotten better but I still will just buy a CD when I want to rather than force myself to look for 11 I don't need and then hold my breath waiting for something to happen. Thanks for r/r/c. jo

Just saved me a whole lotta frustration (Reply to this comment)

Thank you! I just hate companies that resort to lowly tricks to hook you in then make you suffer. Skeptic as I am, I always research "free offers" and came across your review. You were thorough, concise, and really gave the perspective of a frustrated rational consumer. I was thinking of the BMG offer but now I know better. Thanks again!

I found your review very informative... (Reply to this comment)

... and feel like I am not alone in how I feel about the BMG online service and company as a whole. I joined back in fall of 2001. I did get my 10 free CDs and had a huge shipping charge that I was not pleased with. I did pay it though, and fulfilled my obligation of buying one CD that I thought was overpriced of Sade's latest release. I cancelled subscription, and hopefully, I have learned a lesson. -grey002

Thanks for the reminder!! (Reply to this comment)

I keep running across these great deals, but I keep remembering all the trouble that I had when I was in college. I would get sent these cards and if I didn't respond, I would receive the featured item. It was such a big hassle. I would end up returning items, but then they said they never received them back. Sorry for all your troubles, but thanks again for reminding me to stay far away from these "great deals".

Remember them well... (Reply to this comment)
by BeeCharmer
In high school I signed up with Columbia House. I chose my free selections and immediately paid off my account with the obligatory full price items as well. Requested that my account be closed thereafter, yet they kept mailing 'featured selections' which were sent back with yet another request for account closure. I then began receiving correspondence stating my account was in fact not settled, blah, blah, blah.
I had canceled checks to prove the fact that it indeed was, shipping statements and copies of my requests for account closure... the harassment continued. Last time I heard from them my mother got on the phone (high school, remember?)and made it very clear that any further correspondence was to be made through our lawyer, info given.
That, finally, was the last time I heard from CH and they stopped sending those blasted music selections in the mail. Could not believe the audacity of the company to harass its customers in an attempt to sell more product. Annoying still is the memory of the 'featured selections' I would receive - clearly NOT from any of the categories of interest I marked when signing up for the membership. Bah!
Since then, mailings from CH, BMG and similar companies hit the trash bin immediately, unopened.
Nice, thorough review!

It's a trap.... of course.... (Reply to this comment)

the other thing I don't like about them is they don't have indies. The best music is made by indies. I like ALMOST won't buy a CD unless it is on a indie label to $%*$$ the evil exploitative labels.
The NETTLES is an indie.
Buy INDIE!!!!!!

I've been pleased with BMG, but have just received my free CD's and purchased my one obligatory one. I have not been able to find other CD's I'd like to order. I enjoy Celtic music by Loreena McKennitt and they've never heard of her. So I may hang in a little while longer but may go elsewhere like CD Now. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Great warning to people who haven't dealt with BMG (or Columbia House) in the past. I have a long history with both companies, and have *learned* the system. Others may not be as savvy. Thank you for giving people something to chew on...

Great info - BMG pulled the same stunt on me
but I stopped it after the first "bogus" sale
Cd was received.
It really is a good way to build up your CD
collection but their SCAM seems to put a
damper on it. Thanks for the enlightenment.
