My husband, Bill, just celebrated a birthday and I wanted to get him a couple of treats to go along with his birthday present. Bill is a coffee lover and is usually a confirmed Peets fan, but I decided to try something new thanks to a generous MyPoints offer. Coffees of Hawaii sells exquisite coffees from Hawaii and had a limited edition Father's Day roast that sounded fabulous. For $27 and free shipping, I could get a pound of this special brew for Bill. I ordered the coffee and it arrived the other day in two eight ounce bags, well packed in a small box. The bags were not the resealable type, so they each came with a small metal clip. I opened one of the bags just so I could smell it... Wow. It had a heavenly aroma!
When Bill came home later, he told me that he doesn't usually like Hawaiian coffees that much because most of them have been too mild for his liking. However, once he brewed a pot of this special Father's Day roast, featuring beans from Moloka'i, he was sold. This roast was rich and delicious. In fact, I am enjoying a cup right now, sweetened with sugar and tempered with half and half. This is a good cup of joe.
Ordering
Ordering coffee from Coffees of Hawaii is a pretty simple affair. You can create an account, which will securely store your address and credit card and order information. The Web site is easy to navigate, with coffees listed on a drop down menu from the different coffee regions of Hawaii. I wanted something special, so I navigated to the "limited edition" section, where I found the no longer available Father's Day roast.
You can select whole bean or in a variety of grinds, the availability of which seems to depend on the blend. The coffees are available in different quantities, ranging from two ounces to five pounds. Decaf roasts are also available.
Aside from coffee, Coffees of Hawaii also sells music, apparel, cups and saucers, and coffee essential gifts. Coffees of Hawaii also has a recurring delivery program called the "Hana Hou Club". Joining the club is free and gets you discounts and special gifts. You can cancel or modify your membership at any time. With your first order, you can also get a "Coffee Card", which also offers discounts.
Because I had found the site through MyPoints.com, I got a ten percent discount. So, even though a pound of the coffee I selected was $27, I ended up paying $24.30. I was not charged sales tax or shipping. I also got points for my purchase, which I can later redeem for a gift card or cash from MyPoints.com. And after I ordered, I got an email from Coffees of Hawaii with my coffee card membership number. Should I make another order before an actual card gets to me, I can use that to score extra discounts and deals.
My overall impressions
Coffees of Hawaii is a small company. I also get the sense that it's somewhat new and still working out some bugs. Nevertheless, the quality of the coffee we received is first rate. I don't really like the bags the coffee comes in, because I prefer the type of bags that are resealable without a metal clip. I also found the bag somewhat hard to open. I do like the fact that most of the coffees come in packages as small as 2 ounces. That makes it easy to mix and match them and try different flavors without investing in a large bag.
The coffee is a bit pricey. However, the beans are exclusively from Hawaii, which I'm sure has a lot to do with how much they cost. We are very pleased with the Father's Day roast and I would not hesitate to order a different blend. If you like Hawaiian coffee, I would recommend Coffees of Hawaii to you, even though you might be able to get Hawaiian coffees from a larger distributor at a lower price.
