| loverboy4u_17's Full Review: Deus Ex For Windows |
A simple question before I begin this review on the game. Tell me how many games you have played where you are required to use your stealth skills (I am not very good at it), RPG tactics (okay, I am pretty decent in that) and your shooting and FPS skills (damn modesty, I am the king in this)? I think your answer will be none if you have not played Deus Ex.
Deus Ex is a game employing all the above features mentioned above. It is surprisingly a superb game developed by an otherwise mediocre Eidos Interactive. So let me start with the review.
Story - You are J.C Denton – a bio-mechanoid with feelings. The world is in turmoil as a conspirator threatens to destroy the whole world with a deadly kind of virus called “Gray Death”. So as you might have guessed, you have to save the world once again. The story is very engrossing and you actually get attached to the characters in the game. I actually had a lump in my throat when my chopper pilot dies in a crash. (I get very emotional with my games.)
Gameplay - Revolutionary! That’s a single word to describe the awesome gameplay. You have to pick locks, hack computers, swim etc. You get skill points for every mission you complete or any problem you handle tactfully. These skill points can be used to upgrade your skill level in skills like hacking, lock-picking, demolition, weapons skills from untrained to trained to advanced and to master. The skill points are not easy to get. So you better use those skill points, well, ‘skillfully’.
Another thing is that you can pick and use most of the things in the game. You can pick up a cigarrete, a forty or even the rare drug vial and use it. I used the drug vial once and I was ‘high” for a minute in the game. I could not see or aim or walk properly in the game. Quite cool, uh?
One more thing worth mentioning is that you have not one but four different ending to the game. I have not seen this in the 250 odd games I have played till now. So due to this, you have an extra hour or two of gameplay. Within the game, you have to talk to a lot of persons in the game. You can also flirt with some girls in the disco. Conversations with some people are important for you to go ahead in the game.
Then within the game, you get something called augmentation canister which temporarily improve your physical attributes like sight, strength etc. The duration of this “augmentation” this depends on the amount of battery charge you have remaining. Remember you are a bio-mechanoid.
Graphics -Not exactly groundbreaking, but graphics are not all that important for a game of this kind. There is not much of candy floss but things are rather pleasing to your eyes and you can make out what the things are in front of you. The graphics in Hong Kong level are rather neat. Please don’t expect any Max Payne kind of graphics here (Read my review on Max Payne to know more). The fog effect has been put to good use here but I missed the flare effect here. I think a 500 MHZ processor with a 128 MB RAM and 16 MB card should do well for this game.
Sound - Well, this is one of the few games which is excellent in this part. The music in every level suits the level perfectly. I actually found myself shaking my body in the Hong Kong disco level! The conversations are rather interesting and clear. You catch every word the say. Even the accents are perfect!
So just get this game and do the world a favor by saving it yet again!
