NOT having a garbage disposal in the kitchen is tough to get used to. It’s one of those modern conveniences that most of us take for granted…at least I know I sure do! I’m used to letting bits of food scraped from plates after meals go down the drain and rely on the disposal’s steel teeth to crunch them up until they are practically non-existent.
We moved to our new condo about 11 years ago and when we moved here, it came equipped with the cheapest disposal made…a ¼ horsepower disposal. The day finally came when my old disposal finally gave out after close to 12 years of faithful service. It still sounded like the blades were doing their job, but nothing was being chopped up, as I learned the hard way when the pipes became clogged…but that’s another story!
I decided to go to Sears and take a look at what they had to offer. I had always had pretty good luck with Sears Kenmore appliances. (I have a Sears Kenmore sewing Machine that is about 20 years old and still runs like a champ! Come to think of it, my Mom’s Kenmore Sewing machine is still running like a champ and it is almost 50 years old! Now that is really saying something about Sears’s appliances!)
I was fortunate to find and select a disposal that was on sale for only $99.99. This particular disposal is normally priced at $130.00. The new disposal is a larger capacity, and has a larger motor and thus, more power, 3/4 HP (Horsepower Heavy Duty) to be exact. It comes with a full 5 year warranty, and is sound insulated for quiet operation. To top it off, it’s made of stainless steel, therefore the grinding elements resist corrosion.
This Sears Kenmore “Food Disposer” (the official name) comes with “360 degree stainless steel swivel impellers and rotating shredder for jam-resistant grinding”. It also comes with a self-service wrench for simple jams which “could occur” although it does claim to grind the toughest food waste!
The next thing I had to think about was installation. I have no idea how to install a garbage disposal, so I considered hiring one of the Sears professionals install it. When I asked how much it cost to install, I was told that it would cost me an additional $75.00. I decided against that idea, because I knew my younger son was mechanically inclined. I decided to let my son have a go at it.
My son (and his father) offered to put the new disposal in for me. It was a good learning experience for my son! They first removed the old disposal. Next they had to connect the wiring, which was easy to do, according to my son. This disposal comes with a “Quick Lock” mounting assembly for easy installation, so after they had placed the new disposal into position, all that was left to do was twist and lock it. The very last step was to attach a discharge tube to the plumbing outlet. The instructions that came with the disposal unit were clear and easy to understand. [This disposal is for use with 110/120V/60Hz electrical current only.]
I’m still a bit skittish about putting things down the new disposal. Since I had trouble with even the softest of food waste with my old disposal, it is taking some practice and courage to throw those orange peels and eggshells down these days.
Overall, this was a great deal and good buy. If you find that you must replace an old garbage disposal, I highly recommend this Sears Kenmore product!
