Sure, there are thousands of Windows-only applications available, but the Mac OS integrates a lot of functionality that, as a Windows user, you would be forced into finding a third-party solution.

Also, I would stress the fact that the 'necessary' applications are Mac-native, mostly Microsoft Office, Palm software, web browsers, etc. If you want to play games, get a PlayStation, or a $700 PC.

But, as you alluded, you are starting a career in graphic design, yes? If so, the Mac is the preferred platform. Get used to this suite: QuarkXPress, Illustrator/FreeHand, and Photoshop. These apps were designed from the beginning on the Mac platform.
