I have been a VoiceStream subscriber for 6 months and have been more than satisfied with the service.
My reasons for choosing Voicestream over Sprint, Verizon or others offer in this market, were two fold.
First off, I wanted to have the newest hottest phone available. Some might look at this as superficial and say that the service is what matters, but I don't care how great the service is if I have to carry around one of those big beige brick phones. They could give me a bazillion minutes, but lets face it - The phone matters. VoiceStream gave me a tiny and unique Ericsson T28W for FREE. But if a phone comes out tomorrow which I like (and it probably will) VoiceStream makes it easy. VoiceStream uses GSM technology (the standard in Europe) which means you get a tiny smart card that slides in to the phone under the battery. This smart card holds all network information as well as your unique phone number and even your phone book. To switch phones, just buy a new one (cheap on eBay) and slide the card in. No trips to the Sprint Store, no reprogramming fee, no call to customer care, nothing, nada. Battery dead? No Problem, take your smart card and find someone else with a VoiceStream phone, swap cards, and make AND receive calls on YOUR account with YOUR number.
Secondly, they really do give to the most minutes. I've dealt with Sprint, Airtouch, and Verizon in the past and all of these companies give you a small amount of "anytime" minutes and a ton on minutes that are available between 11P-6A. This is all done with the hopes that you'll use all your anytime minutes and then they can start charging you 40 cents a minute for the over-time. This has not happened to me EVER with VoiceStream - and I do my fare share of talking. No complicated rules, for $39 500 minutes ANYTIME, and UNLIMITED on the weekends. Thats over 8 hours of talk time on the 20 weekdays of a months, roughly a half hour a day.
Now for what you really want to know... How's the service? If you need your phone to be in service everywhere at ALL times VoiceStream is NOT for you. Most carriers will revert back to analog mode (available everywhere!) if no digital signal is available, VoiceStream does NOT its digital only. Digital service will cut in and out or stutter at times but generally its very clear and never gets any static. I have NEVER (okay, maybe once or twice) had a dropped call. Service within Columbus and Cincy is great, when service is lost (rarely) its just a matter of going outside or moving across the room, not driving across town.
