Pros:Cheaper, removes red stains, smells fresh
Cons:Not free & clear
The Bottom Line: A solid performer, I would purchase this detergent again.
Years ago a friend told me about a stain remover called Zout, abd I've used it on and off ever since. A few weeks ago I noticed that Purex Laundry Detergent now makes a version that contains Zout, so I picked it up knowing I'd soon be needing detergent.
Product Description & Claims
Purex Complete Laundry Detergent with Zout comes in a 60 ounce blue bottle with a red cap. The scent in my bottle is called Fresh Morning Burst. The cap doubles as a measuring cup.
This is said to be a "Triple Enzyme Stain Remover" that is safe for all washing machines, even HE (high efficiency) models. The bottle will wash 33 loads of laundry.
The three types of enzymes can target stains such as grass, chocolate, and tomato sauce. Purex is made by the Dial Corporation, who claim this is a hypoallergenic formula.
My Experience
I've had bad experiences with blue colored laundry detergent in the past. Some brands have even left blue stains on my clothing. Because of this I pour in the thick liquid detergent when my washer is filling up with water before I add my clothes to the washing machine.
There are two lines on the measuring cap, one for regular or normal loads and one for large loads. I generally measure my detergent on the normal line.
For extra tough stains, the directions say to pour directly onto the stain and rub in. That's exactly what I did when my granddaughter had red jello stains on the back of her khaki pants. I tried other stain removers on those areas but the stains remained. I was hesitant because of the blue coloring in the detergent, but I figured the pants were ruined anyway, so I rubbed the detergent in and let it sit for a few minutes before washing them.
To my delight all of the red stains were removed from Evie's pants. I was thrilled I didn't have to throw them away.
The detergent has a light scent, slightly floral with a hint of citrus, and I actually like the smell of it. The scent doesn't linger on our clothes, however.
So far I am very pleased with this detergent, it seems to clean well and our clothes smell fresh. I'd purchase it again, and it was one of the cheaper detergents I looked at, on sale for only $4.00.
