I want to share my 2 shopping experiences in Compuvest.
On February 4th I ordered 3 hard drives MAXTOR 73G SCSI U320 (Compuvest part number HSM73501) for my server. The price was the lowest on the web ($599). Credit card I was using didn't have the correct billing address on my order, as I was using the address to "ship to". A customer service rep called me a few hours later, explained the problem. I then gave him a new address and he followed up the next day with a call to let me know that the package was shipped. He also sent a prompt email to confirm the shipping along with a tracking number for FedEx. Two days later, I received my package. The drives were brand spanking new. I installed them, have no problem so far.
I went back to shop in Compuvest a couple of weeks ago. Their prices are the best on the web; the site has nice colors and easy ordering system. I urgently needed a memory chip replacement (one of the chips failed on one of our work stations). So I purchased 128MB SDRAM PC133 8NS for $29.95 on line + $16.50 for overnight shipping. The order was placed at 4 pm on March 6. Next morning the package was delivered, but the memory was not working with my machine. I called customer service and explained my problem. The representative (named Restem) was very polite and helped me to troubleshoot my PC. He seemed to be very knowledgeable about computers. I was given a return authorization number to send the memory back, as I ordered the wrong type and it turned out to be not compatible. I was offered to try a different kind of memory. While I was shipping the original order back to Compuvest, the replacement has been shipped already. The memory worked this time!
I was charged a restocking fee for the original purchase, as it was not Compuvest’s fault that I ordered the wrong type. It clearly stated in their policy on line:
SHIPPING CHARGES ARE NOT REFUNDABLE!
Restocking fee for either non-defective, unused or unopened items returned within two weeks is 15%. So I knew what I was doing.
I do not understand why people are so upset about Compuvest’s charging a restocking fee (as if nobody else does it) when it is usually a customer's fault who did not know what he or she was ordering or assumed that everything was supposed to work and be compatible. Many people never read the policy or never ask a sales person about it. Some people do not even know how to install the part they purchased and end up burning it and returning as if it were defective. I know a few people who did this and then blamed the merchant for the defective merchandise. They just make a lot of assumptions about how the Internet business should be.
I think it was fair that I paid for my mistake ($4.49 by the way it was). I did not feel that I was deceived or became a victim of some sort of scam. Every time I called customer service (toll-free number) I was helped promptly and was never put on hold for more than 1 minute. I prefer they charge me for MY mistake rather than overcharging me every time for products or shipping in order to make profit. By the way a lot of other companies out there charge a lot of money for shipping every time an order is placed, not only when a wrong product is ordered! I CHOOSE COMPUVEST for my future shopping for computer parts! Great customer service! This is the company YOU can TRUST.
