On February 4th I ordered 3 hard drives MAXTOR 73G SCSI U320 (Compuvest part number HSM73501) for my server. The price was the lowest on the web ($599). Credit card I was using didn't have the...

Well I went on Compuvest web site today and checked a CDRW section. I totally get your idea, as it is not clear on the description of the product itself, whether it is refurbished or not. When I clicked on the extended description of one of the products, it said refurbished in the very end of the description. So some of the products are in fact advertised as refurbished. It does not look like all of them are. Did you read the full description at the time of purchase? I ordered hard drives from this company and they were brand new. Why are you saying that all of the products are refurbished? Just because you did not read the description well enough?

I don't think you understand people's objections with Compuvest.

This company misrepresents merchandise as being new when in fact it is refurbished or incomplete. Compuvest euphemistically labels such items as "White Box" specials.

From my experience, as well as many others, they run a bait-and-switch type of operation. You think you’re buying something new for a great price. Instead, you get something refurbished or defective for a high price. You can get a better deal on eBay for the type of used/refurbished equipment they sell.

In my specific case, they were about $5 cheaper than the identical CD R/W drive on Amazon. When the drive arrived, it was clearly used (had many scratches) and incomplete (no software or drivers). If the Compuvest web site accurately described this item, Amazon would have been the better value.

To add insult to injury, after the customer realizes that he has been scammed, Compuvest will charge him a restocking fee to take back the item that was misrepresented in the first place.

When I complained to my credit card company about Compuvest’s sales tactics, Compuvest sent them a printout of what they said was the CD R/W drive listing from their web site. This printout had "Refurbished" printed on the bottom. I was surprised by this, as this was not the same web page I saw when I ordered. So, I visited that web page (same product, same Compuvest part number, same URL). Guess what: no mention of the item being refurbished.

So, it no so much that every customer with a bad Compuvest experience is stupid and doesn’t know what he’s ordered. Instead, these are sophisticated buyers who do know the difference between good and bad equipment.

Their anger at Compuvest comes from being deceived by this company.
