Pros: Teaches you to make healthy changes you can learn to live with.
Cons: Hard work! But anything worthwhile involves hard work!
The Bottom Line: Buy the book only if you have definitely decided to make a change. If you haven't made that decision, any diet book, video, etc. is a waste of money.

| cydni's Full Review: Body For Life |
My husband and I are just like most aging baby boomers, busy, tired, out of shape. Maybe we're worse. My husband had a cardiac stent placement about a year ago and was told he may have to have another. We've been pretty bummed out about it. He was told to get moving, get the pounds off and change his diet. He did... for about six weeks. Then he fell off the wagon and started drinking lots of sugary pop again and eating the pizza and brownies and all the other foods he likes, simply because he felt deprived.
Just about a month ago we heard from his niece. She had gained a lot of weight before her wedding and the last time we saw her she was really unhappy about her physique. That was about a year ago.
Since that time she found the Body for Life program. She's lost 80 pounds and has changed her life.
We figured, "This has to be something we can do too." So, we bought the book.
I went to the grocery store and bought healthy foods. The book has a list of "authorized" foods. Proteins, carbs, fruits, veggies. Lots of good stuff. Then we stocked up on dumbells.
The program asks you to eat six small meals daily, which include a portion of protein and a portion of carbohydrates. You add the veggies at least twice a day.
The hard part was getting started on the exercise. To follow the program you have alternating days of aerobics (intense 20 minute workouts) with days of weight training (upper body and lower body, about 45 minutes in duration each time). Any of the weight training exercises can be done with dumbbells, but our sons had a bench and weights we've been using too.
We've been into this for two weeks. I've dropped six pounds already. My husband is down seven pounds. We haven't been hungry, and if we do get hungry, we know exactly what we can eat, just by looking at the list in the book. We get one free day per week where we can eat whatever we want, and we don't have to work out. I honestly have to say, we haven't really splurged. I feel so much better, now that I'm not stuffing myself at meals and overeating on sweets. We almost look forward to the exercise now too. It IS HARD WORK. You have to be dedicated to making a change. This is a program you adopt FOR LIFE, as the title of the book says. We had no choice. It was make changes, or drop dead. My husband's blood pressure was up, even on medication, and he had to do something, quick. Under doctor's orders, he has paced himself in the exercise program, which the book recommends, anyway. It is a program where you build on your successes and increase the demands on your body gradually, with each successive workout. The program can be adapted to each individual's limitations. The whole program was created to teach you to improve on your current condition, not become a buff beach babe, although the before and after pictures show you how much you can change yourself.
We both feel better, after just two weeks. My husband's blood pressure is down again and he has begun to have more stamina. He eats what's right, and it hasn't really required too much willpower. If you are serious about making a lifestyle change. This book can help.
