Pros: Great customer service, no roaming charges in calling area, fairly large calling areas
Cons: Connection is sometimes fuzzy, even in metropolitan areas.
The Bottom Line: Voicestream has proven itself to me to be a pretty much ideal cellular provider. Prices are decent, coverage is good, and customer service is excellent. What more could anyone want?

When my girlfriend and I first got out of high school about two years ago and went to our respective colleges, we were faced with a problem that had never been an issue before: getting ahold of each other. Before, we had seen each other daily because we shared several classes and lunch, but college was different. It didn't even become a long-distant relationship like those that other unfortunate college-goers have to endure; our universities are in the same city! But when that city is as enormous as Houston, it can be difficult to be young, unmarried, going to school, and still able to reach the (current) love of your life when you need. So we opted to spend the little money we had to get cell phones.
Of course, making that decision really didn't place us in an easier situation: we were completely surrounded by cellular options that all claimed to be supreme while in reality none seemed to be altogether better or worse than the rest. We did some shopping; we looked at Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, and Voicestream, and truly, I think it came down to flipping a coin. We really didn't need all that many minutes (we just wanted to have a way to say "come pick me up!" or "I need food!" quickly and easily), and we didn't have a lot of money to spend. Nationwide calling also wasn't an issue. So in the end, Voicestream came out a bit ahead: their lowest rate plan, $20 for 75 minutes, seemed to be about what we needed, and the extra 500 weekend minutes didn't hurt either.
So far, Voicestream has been an ideal choice. Local coverage is usually excellent (though there is some minor fuzz every now and then). Even in some of the more remote areas of the home calling region (which covers the more populated areas of Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana for me), such as my family's beachhouse in southern Texas where my mother's Verizon service doesn't come in at all, Voicestream is loud and clear. Of course, to be completely honest, I have found some areas absolutely in the middle of nowhere where I get no service at all, but presumably most people don't spend most of their time in the middle of nowhere. If you're looking for a cellular service that gives you the ability to call mom and tell her how your wonderful hike across the desert of New Mexico is going, you might want to consider someone else.
So, the price and coverage are both great. But, how about the most tricky part of all? How is the customer service? In answer to that, I would have to say that, according to my experience, Voicestream's customer support is the best thing it has going for it. I am thoroughly impressed with how this company treats its customers. Both times I've had major concerns and gave Voicestream a ring, I was greeted by a friendly voice on the other end of the line who patiently yet efficiently found a satisfactory answer for me. Really, there isn't much more to say; it's much easier to point out flaws in a bad customer support network than to find particular virtues in a good one. Let's just say I couldn't have hoped for more.
For my first cellular service provider, I really can't say enough for Voicestream. It seems to have the big three down pat: price, coverage, and customer support. Truthfully however, I can't say for sure that I will stay with Voicestream after my contract is up in July. If some other provider offers some incredible deal (such as first minute free, or free incoming calls, if that even exists), I might have to take them up on it. But if not, I would happily stay with Voicestream for another year, or two. . .or ten. . .
