Get rid of your prejudice and write a meaningful review (Reply to this comment)

I am so sick of hearing of the battle between Win 2K and XP. Let's face it, they are both good. I don't thing the general population will benefit from hearing our geeky debate on the fact the Win 2K is good....that is not rocket science. And you are totally basing your experience based on games....that is too narrow. If that is what you are aiming it towards then your review is helpful but please....cut out the debates and write a real review....nobody cares about our geeky debates if a novice user were to try to find out how good XP or 2000 really is and why.
Wake up and smell the coffee....both are good for different reasons....no reason to cut down XP. I think that the requirement of vendors having a Microsoft Certified driver will cut down the problems of plug and play and even with that, XP does a real good job with drivers from my work experience on doing ghosts, etc. for our users.
We don't need Hitlers in writing reviews....You like Linux, more power to you. You like Win 2K and hate XP even though you know XP is pretty darn good and just as good as Win 2K for end users....more power to you but please, keep the sarcasm to a minimum and write a "Real" review"

I am glad someone share the same view as I do. However, I can't help but think there is a consipirisy going on here: I couldn't find your epinions until I scrolled down WAAAAAAAAAY down.
I finally wrote a peice about XP in epinions, and at the time, I thought I was the only one with a negative review.
Your title sums it up best: How is it better than 2000?
As for your problems, I didn't have such problems. Sorry to hear you suffering. BUT, even when working, it'll make you rip your hair out. Get Windows 2000 instead. :)

I'd be willing to bet... (Reply to this comment)

There is some kind of hardware conflict or a software incompatability issue causing the problem you had. I have set up GeForce3 cards on similar machines with no problems and even loaded the detonator drivers for XP on those same systems.
I have a GeForce3 Ti200 running on a KT7A Raid board without any trouble at all. However, I have read on a few tech pages that there is an issue with Geforce detonator drivers and Windows XP when using a VIA chipset on an Athlon board. You may have one of those chipsets (sorry but I don't rememmber the exact chipset).
I hope you have better luck in ther future.

I am loving XP and find it stable. It seems some have a great experience and others have HELL. I did have some mouse problems with gaming at first, but found it was the optical.
There are some great tweaks here if anyone is interested.

Yeah, Epinions is just going haywire today.
I have the oldest drivers I can possibly get, the ones that shipped with my card.

gosh epinions can be such a pain sometimes, i had typed a relaly long response about how i got mine working smoothly but as i hit the publish button, all was lost!
anyways, i turned off all the stupid colors and animated characters and that makes a big difference in the smoothness Windows XP runs.
I hope you sort your problems with the graphics card out. I read that the newest so called XP compatible GeForce dirvers are NOT compatible at all!!! I am using the older release, 8/09/2001, version 2.1.8.1 I think. Try and see if you cna get a copy of that, I installed that one and I have absolutely no problems at all and my GF MX runs a lot fsater than with the dirvers XP provides.

My roommate's graphics cards and stuff all got detected too, except for the CD burner.
My stuff all works except the video card, same for my coworkers.
All exceptions and no games make Alkaiser a pretty ticked off user.
As far as I can tell, if your peripherals are over a year and a half old, they'll pick up, anything else they won't, and there isn't anything that you can really do to rectify the situation.
I mean, what am I supposed to do in this situation? I've downloaded all the drivers I can try. Am I just supposed to be fine with my graphics card not working?

What? A Windows product that crashes? No way! (Reply to this comment)

All I know is, when my parents finally bought a new computer and got stuck with XP, they were incredibly excited when I showed them how to turn off all the stupid menu animations and get rid of the ugly green taskbar.
Really, if you want an installation where all you have to do is pop in the CD and hit Ok a couple of times, all you need is:

Ok, if you primarily use your computer for gaming, some version of windows is probably your only choice... For the other 90% of us, make the switch. You'll feel a lot better about yourself.

no problems here (Reply to this comment)
by hm8080
I am an average gamer (i.e. I play games about as much as I use the PC for other work) and I have no problems whatsoever with my AMD Duron 750 and GeForce MX Windows XP setup, XP detected my MSI card right away and I installed the Detonator drivers from Nvidia's website and I get a 4400 score on 3DMark. No problems with games crashing so far, I even am able to run older games like Dark Reign 1 and Total Annihilation etc.
