Telezapper may not meet telco specs (Reply to this comment)
by maniac42
I've read some unofficial material on the technical specifications for SIT tones, and it is clear that the popular sit.wav file that is available from a number of sources on the Web doesn't meet them by a long shot. The timing of the tones is incorrect, as well as their pitch. Even without sophisticated equipment, if you have a suitable audio file editing program on your computer that can generate tones of arbitrary pitch, duration and amplitude, such as Audacity, you can assemble the correct tones and compare them by ear to the ones in sit.wav. It is possible that some predictive dialers are very sensitive to out-of-spec tones or will only respond if all three SIT tones are present. By only generating a single tone of the wrong duration, the Telezapper may, indeed, not work with one or more popular predictive dialers.
Also worth noting, if you decide to record SIT tones for your tape-based answering machine, the recording should be done on the actual machine that will be using the tape. There are speed variations from one tape transport to another, and a tape recorded on one machine will play back at a slightly different speed on another, affecting the pitch of the SIT tones.

You saved me money--Thanks! (Reply to this comment)

Here in Michigan we don't have a "do not call" list yet. For that reason I was planning to go out today and get Telezapper for my parents for Christmas. I think I will just go over there today and help get the SIT tones on their answering machine. Even if the SIT tones are only marginal at decreasing their calls, any decrease is better than what they are now putting up with, and at least the SIT tones are free.

Thanks for the positive comment.
It's been a while since I first wrote my review.
After having tried it for several months now, I can say that the SIT tone that I put on my answering machine seemed to be only marginally effective.
Here in Georgia it takes a while to actually get on the "Do Not Call" list. You can only get added at the beginning to the fiscal quarter, so it took a couple of months to get added to the list.
Once the "Do Not Call" list kicked in, I noticed a dramatic decrease in telemarketer calls! Much fewer calls than the SIT tone trick.
Glad my article could help.

Telezapper zapper (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for the thorough review. I bought one today, but decided to check online to see what people thought of it before I opened the package. Thanks to your links to the DMA, I've requested that my number be removed. I'll also try your SIT tone idea.
Thanks again.

I've read your review and it's great. I would like to thank you for all of your helpful information on how to stop telemarketers. Unfortunately I was a TeleZapper victim and now I know. Thanks again for all your information.
Les.
