| fattyburger's Full Review: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Sound Card |
I purchased a Sound Blaster Live! last May when I was building my computer. At the time Creative had a high reputation among myself and my friends. I still respect the advances they've made for the industry, but they've slipped and fallen along the way, and I'm one of the many that have walked on, leaving them behind.
The card installed without too much difficulty, although I didn't install Creative's bloated software suite. Other software does the job just as well, without putting itself into every nook and cranny of your operating system. I tried this card with MP3s, CD audio, DVD movies, games and anything else I could think of to throw at it. I was quite surprised when I discovered that the sound quality was very poor, and the device's drivers left my computer unstable. EAX was also badly implemented, causing various sounds' volumes and effects to be off in games. In some instances, the games were quite unplayable, as it was quite difficult to tell what was going on.
I purchased a Philips Seismic Edge after this, and then a Hercules Game Theater XP after that, finally finding a card I was happy with. I wouldn't recommend anyone make the same mistake I did in buying a Live, regardless of the price.
