| bperreault's Full Review: Hilton Hotel Chain |
After some difficult months with medical problems, I needed this pampering. A few years ago my husband and I planned a trip to see the Rockettes at Radio City and a Broadway show. The night before we were to leave, I developed a severe case of vertigo. Down the drain went our theater and train ticket money. So this December we again planned a trip to see the Rockettes and the Rockefeller Christmas tree. This was also going to be our Granddaughter’s first train ride and first time in NYC. We were to stay at the Hilton New York while my daughter and granddaughter were staying with a friend in the city.
A week before our trip I learned I had a mass on my kidney. A CAT scan was done and I would find out the results on Friday, the day we were to leave for NYC. My wonderful doctor said I could call him as soon as I arrived at the hotel. After an hour waiting for a cab at Penn Station, we finally arrived at the Hilton only to find long lines at their enormous reception desk. It was 3 o’clock, we hadn’t eaten lunch, and I still needed to call the doctor and get to the Rockettes for their matinee. While my husband stood in the slow moving line, I ran to the restaurant for a take-out lunch. I did get to contact the doctor to find out the tumor was benign and we did make it to the theater on time. After all of that, our trip was wonderful and I enjoyed the Hilton.
The Lobby
Their huge lobby is impressive with marble and gold and an area of comfortable armchairs to relax. The concierge was extremely helpful providing us with maps, suggestions and dinner reservations. At one end of the lobby near the elevators, there is a person stationed to help with any questions you might have. There were elevators for rooms 1 to 14 and others for 15 to the top so there weren’t crowds waiting for an elevator. We did not try the bar off the lobby but it was crowded on several occasions. Perhaps that is because there was a huge convention of teachers staying there. (I can say that because I am one.) We also had not time for their Jacuzzi or fitness room.
The Restaurant
The only hotel restaurant we tried was the NY Marketplace, a large room serving ethnic food. They even had Japanese breakfast food. The food was served buffet style and was acceptable, but nothing to rave about. Service was fine and friendly.
Room
We had the standard room which cost about $250 a night. It included a king size bed, armoire, desk and chair, night table, armchair, and fully stocked refrigerator. Both the room and bath were very clean. The spacious room included the usual amenities: a coffee maker and daily replenished supplies, iron, hair dryer, extra pillows, blankets, color TV,etc.
Check out was a breeze. We even were able to store all the luggage for 5 people while we continued our site seeing before our train trip home.
Location
The Hilton New York is located on the Avenue of the Americas between W53rd and W54th. We found it very convenient for the theater, strolling 5th Avenue, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center. Apparently so did the Secretary of Commerce. We saw her and her entourage entering the hotel as we waited for our cab.
The Hilton New York claims to be the largest hotel in NYC. You can visit their web site at
