I am on vacation and that means I finally have time to see some of the movies I would not have time for otherwise. Third on my list: Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) a dark little twist on a beloved children fairytale staring one of Hollywood’s newest—and reportedly its highest paid actress—Kristen Stewart (Twilight, Jumper, Into The Wild).
The Story
Directed by Rubert Sanders (Van Helsing) Snow White and the Huntsman offers up a much darker version of the Disney classic Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs (1937), itself based on the 1812 Brothers Grimm fairytale. In this modern version Snow White is portrayed by Stewart, she is still a princess whose throne has been usurped by the evil witch Ravenna portrayed by Charlize Theron (Hancock, Monster, The Italian Job) a very woman obsessed with her beauty that she regularly consults a magic mirror for a status update.
Ravenna is old you see and in order to maintain her beauty she must drink the souls of the young. Dark, very, dark! One day the mirror, mirror on the wall, tells her that she is not long the fairest of them all, that in fact Snow White is more beautiful. So she sends for the Huntsman portrayed by Chris Hemsworth (Thor, The Avengers, Red Dawn) to track down and bring her Snow White.
My Thoughts
I don’t know whose idea it was to cast Ms. Stewart as Snow White, but they should be fired! I hated her in this movie, and that is perhaps understating my opinion. Thankfully Stewart had little to say throughout most of Snow White and the Huntsman because when she did utter a sentence it was totally unbelievable and horrible. Note to Hollywood: Kristen Stewart cannot act! She is barely tolerable in the Twilight saga but in this movie her one emotion, open mouth expressions and stares are unforgivable. She ruined this movie for me, well that and the ghastly script!
I did not think too much of Chris Hemsworth character or his performance either. His character was written weak (despite what the trailers would have you believe) and his performance weaker still and I did not buy him as “The Huntsman” could find the damsel come what may. And there was zero chemistry between him and Stewart, none and watching them on the screen together was at time painful.
Now Charlize, she owned her character as she always does. She was a wonderful evil villain consumed by her need to look fetching no matter what. Sam Spruell (The Hurt Locker, K-19: The Widowmaker, Defiance) portrays her brother Finn to evil perfection and the two together make Snow White and the Huntsman bearable.
Despite Ms. Theron’s inviting performance I could not sit through another showing of Snow White and the Huntsman; the combination of Stewart and Hemsworth have made the movie quite unwatchable. Yes, some of the action sequences were cutting-edge and enjoyable to watch, but they were few and far between. I do not recommend this movie!
