Loved your review. First time I heard of the "stupid tax" was for the Powerball lottery "being a tax on the stupid".

Distrabution Center in Georgia (Reply to this comment)
by brettw
I recently resubscribed to netflix beacuse of a need of older movies for a College course, and was pleasently surprised to find out that there was a new distrabution center in Georgia! Now I get movies in 2 to 3 days instead of 4 to 6.
By the way, great review. Summed up their service perfectly.

But I didn't have a DVD player two years ago!
Damn, I hate to be behind the curve.
Thanks for reading!

You should have listened to me a couple years ago on this -- you'd be grandfathered into an even better rate. :)

This is a great review, but I'm not sure if NetFlix can be used from here in the UK. Oh well. :)
All the best,

Taxes? (Reply to this comment)
by bud41
Taxes are fees imposed by the government. The costs you mentioned are fees imposed by private companies. That's free enterprise. If we don't want to pay them, we can follow their rules or shop somewhere else can't we?

I love my netflix! (Reply to this comment)

I never pay late charges (though I do pay many other stupid taxes!) so netflix isn't particularly economical for me. Also, we in the midwest have the same 4-5 day mailing window that others have mentioned.
Yet I love this service because I can try movies that Blockbuster doesn't carry (esp. non-rated versions) AND I get to skip the whole going-to-the-video-store experience that I've never been a big fan of anyway. Nice review.

I had never heard of Netflix, but it sounds great! I'm going to check them out, but first I need to go to Blockbuster and return last nights DVD to avoid a stupid late fee! Thanks for the reminder!

I can't tell you how many times I've gotten one of those automated reminders from Hollywood Video that I have a movie out (not mine, I usually find it in my son's room) and that I need to win the lottery to pay the late fees.
This means that I usually just buy the blasted DVD at Costco since I know he'll rent it, misplace it, and I'll end up paying the fee since the account is in my name. Kids.
Netflix sounds like a perfect compromise. I won't have to buy those "maybe" movies that we watch once and go "what were we thinking". I can possibly get some of the chick flicks that I like to watch and aren't available in stores or at Hollywood. And, I can just budget $20 a month - which is probably less than I spend now on late fees.
Thanks Andrea!

Re: Who are you bribing? (Reply to this comment)
by Joubert, in Online Stores & Services
News to me. I've used them for almost a year and usually get mine within 2 mailing days. Sometimes 3. Good stuff here, duck. I'm hooked on mine.
We had a rating party one night so we have over 400 films rated (note - no Epinions) with them. As such, their recommendations tend to be right on the mark.
Netflix works well, as you point out, as a complement. The kids still rent from Blockbuster -- part of that instant gratification thing, I guess. But I use Netflix to watch tons of stuff I would never ordinarily think to rent. And it's just convenient as all get out.
We've almost upgraded a time or two, but seem to have the viewing pattern down now so that one is always ready to be viewed.
Whooda thunk it, eh? Borrowed videos in the mail.

Who are you bribing? (Reply to this comment)
by quasar
Most East Coast folks I know do have a 5-6 day mail time for DVDs. I decided not to try it because I've been told over and over again that it isn't fast enough to be worth it for Easterners.
In all honesty, with the Blockbuster frequent renter program (which includes 1 free DVD/month, rent 1 get 1 free Mon-Wednesday, and rent 5 get one free) I'm probably better off using Blockbuster financially too. Plus I get to walk to the store - any excuse to walk these days, right?
