tough job to install this...

Pros: good looks, plug and play USB connectivity
Cons: difficult to install, bad technical support from philips
The Bottom Line: if you want easy to use cd-rw writer, better go for some other brand (not philips).

Having read that this is a USB based cd rw writer, i went in and bought it from a auction site. Infact I bought two writer of same model philips 400 series.
To my astonishment, when i plugged in the AC adapter for the both of these writers, one was working and other was not.
i thought there was problem with one of them since i was not able to eject the cd plate even after plugging it in power supply. I connected them to a dell pc and ..surprise both are working now. That means, even though the 2 cd writers i bought are of same type, one works when i just plugin to ac adaptor and other works only when i used USB cable and AC adapter. How strange is philips technlogy!!!
Then I installed the driver of cable on windows 2000 and the drive was not getting recognized by windows. I called up philips customer support. They said the drivers which come with package dont work with the writer (??). They asked me to download new version of cable driver from freecom.com. It worked. But...yeah again there is a but...the easy adaptec cd burning software which comes with package was not able to identify the cd writer.
This cd-drive is not identified by most of popular cd burning software. I could test it with Nero and products from www.roxio.com and both the software are compatible with this drive.
Once Installed, this drive is not giving me anyother problems. It is doing what it is supposed to do, burning CDs and playing music.
WHEN GOING GETS TOUGH, TOUGH GETS GOING. is apt for this player. This cd-rw drive is not for novices who might be lured by it USB connectivity feature. Be careful before buying this one.
