Online department stores offer a convenient way to shop from the comforts of home and I often consult online stores not just for convenient purchasing, but also to see what is offered before I venture outside the house to an actual store. I have used many of these sites numerous times, but one I have visited only a few times is Dillards.com, the web site for the department store chain.
What is This Service About?:
Dillards.com is the web site for the store and it sells most of what is found in the actual, brick and mortar stores. Some of the categories of merchandise include:
Women
Juniors
Shoes
Handbags
Accessories
Lingerie
Beauty
Men
Children
In other words, it is basically a snapshot of an actual Dillard’s store. It sells similar merchandise and includes a few convenient services like a place to establish or lookup a wedding registry or baby registry. You can also setup a charge account, link your Dillard’s credit card to your online account, and even pay your credit card balance online.
My Experience:
Dillard’s is, for me, a not so frequently visited department store that I will sometimes visit when in need of some of new clothes or to use a gift card. Dillard’s locations can be found in the larger shopping centers in my area and they often do contain nice clothing, even if the price is a little steep. I usually venture to Dillard’s for the purpose of buying clothing, but usually not for much else.
A visit to Dillard’s online store reveals items similar to those found in the actual stores. As I said before, I often check an online store before I leave my house to visit an actual store, just to see what they have to offer and check the prices. Dillards.com has a good online selection with prices that are about the same as the regular prices in the physical location stores, but usually without any special offers. You can connect your Dillard’s charge account with you online shopping and earn points that can be used for discounts on future purchases. Once you have an online account and charge, it is common to receive special online offers that deduct percentage amounts from my purchases, but other than this, the online site doesn’t have many great offers.
As I said, a visit to Dillard’s for me is usually for clothing, but I often resist making this type of purchase through the online site. Why would I resist making an online purchase at Dillards.com when I so freely shop online every place else? The reason is because, in general, I do not like shopping for clothing online. I much prefer to actually see and touch the clothing I purchase before I seal the deal and since clothing is what I usually purchase when I shop at Dillard’s, I am often reluctant to shop via the online store at all. However, I will have to say that when I have given in and made the online purchase, what I have received has been just as nice (and fit me just as well) as what I would purchase in the store, so I cannot complain.
Probably the main strike against Dillards.com is, as mentioned before, the lack of many special offers (unless you have a Dillard’s charge card and can receive e-mail deals). The site doesn’t offer prices better than those offered in the physical stores and they don’t usually offer free shipping, either. So, the main advantage of shopping at dillards.com is the convenience. If you want to try out Dillards.com and save at least some money, I recommend searching the web for Dillards coupons. Retail Me Not and a few other online places sometimes have good online coupons for this and other stores.
With the remaining of the shopping experience, it does seem to run rather smoothly. I like that you do not need to establish an account to complete an order. You can choose to pay as a guest and bypass having to store credit cards, addresses, etc. I also like that you can take returns right back to your local Dillard’s, if one is present. You do not have to mail them back.
Bottom Line:
My overall opinion on Dillards.com is that it is an acceptable online service and a good way to shop for more high- end clothing and other items from the comforts of home. The lack of sales is a concern, but the prices are no different from those in the actual stores and there are online coupons available for those willing to search for them on the internet. The merchandise is good and the shipping takes about five working days, which isn’t bad. Add it up and you have what amounts to an acceptable, although not particularly memorable, online shopping experience.
