Don't buy from Carsdirect before reading this! (Reply to this comment)

Before you plunk down your $250.00 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit to hold a vehicle, know that: the more specific you are about the vehicle and options you want, the more improbable it is Carsdirect will be able to locate one for you -- within a reasonable distance from where you live. YOU cannot back out of the agreement with them. All they have to do to live up to their part of the agreement is locate you a car. It could be 1k or 2k miles away, it doesn't matter. If you choose not to purchase the vehicle you've specified you want, and pick it up 1,000 miles from home, they'll deal you the ''bait and switch'' routine. "Well, if you'd like to broaden your parameters, maybe we'll be able to locate that vehicle you want."

OK, have a 2nd choice in color, year, and options.

Based on what Carsdirect states at it's website, they do not tell you the above information unless you talk to someone on the phone and push to have your questions answered. "What happens if you can't find my vehicle in 2 days?" (The time frame they say they will have your car.) "Will my car be available within 30 miles of home?) Go ahead, ask them that question. You'll get some vague answers and the happy spiel.

NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT? Forgetaboutit!

These people might not be illegal, but they sure as heck aren't ethical. The other car middlemen out there are now suspect.

All it took was a web page printout to get your dealer to match the price? Hmmm...some creative cutting and pasting may be in order here.....hehe

There's one thing I don't like about the Carsdirect Website... (Reply to this comment)
by rukiddingmeboy
..and that is: When you're looking at the option packages from a vehicle, the original window disappers and is replaced by the new one. This makes it hard to compare different packages ( for example, on an Elantra GT, the option packages look VERY similar. The only way to get around this is save the window contents of different option packages to a text editor and compare them yourself.

Great Help (Reply to this comment)
by serena21
I have used the site three times to do the research on three different cars. Although I didn't buy the cars through them, I did take the print out to the dealership of what was being included and how much their price is. We were talking 2-3 thousand dollars difference. And the dealership matched the price.

Whether or not you chose to purchase a vehicle from them, they are still a great resource for gathering information. Try them out. :-)

This is very well written and detailed Aud, but I'm wondering if there are other fees they would tack on, or any glitches that would occur after you purchased the car.

As I am considering purchasing a car in the near future, I am interested in the knowing the whole process up to the receipt of the car. Otherwise it would be a risk to me.

But, I did enjoy the review, and what you indicated is certainly important to know.
