| john44102's Full Review: Philips DSR6000R DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo Servic... |
How many times have you been channel surfing, and come to the conclusion that there's nothing on that you want to watch? For me, before getting Tivo, it happened quite frequently. Even with hundreds of channels on DTV, nothing was showing that I was interested in. That has changed. Now there is ALWAYS something recorded by either me or Tivo that I *want* to watch, and *can* watch on my schedule.
The ads for Tivos, and PVRs in general, always tout the ability to "pause live TV". I think we've used this feature once in six months of having it. In fact, I think we've only watched live TV a handful of times.
I've been watching all of my favorite programs from Tivo's recordings on it's 30 hour hard drive: Jerry Springer, Bewitched, Dark Shadows, Hands on History, Queer as Folk. My other half has set up other shows to record: The Colbys, Golden Girls and Animaniacs.
It's really easy to set up a recording. You can get an alphabetic listing of all shows, find the show you're looking for, and hit enter. One of the few choices you need to make is to record just that showing, or get a "season pass". A season pass records all of the upcoming showings of that program (you can even set it to skip repeats).
We've also set up key words to record: anything with "rollercoaster" in the title or description. And anything with "gay", although this has had some unintended consequences as a actress in "The Education of Max Bickford" has that as her middle name!
Probably the neatest thing though, is that Tivo learns what you like to watch, and records stuff on it's own. You can give programs up to three "thumbs up" or "thumbs down". Tivo will then find program similar to the "thumbs up" programs and record them on it's own. I gave Tivo three thumbs up on car racing, so it regularly records that on it's own for me. Then it found programs similar to that: drag racing, which I don't like. So I gave drag racing three thumbs down, and Tivo doesn't record that anymore.
Probably the only downside to this unit is that it only records using it's dual DTV tuners. While it can record two shows at once on DTV, it cannot record anything from cable or over-the-air. If DTV doesn't offer locals in your area this may not be the unit for you.
