Mad Season's only CD (Reply to this comment)
by dejahthoris
Musical Hacks??? Grunge?? The majority of the members of Mad Season might have come from grunge bands (Saunders being the exception) but the sound on Above is definitely not grunge. It's got more of a psychedelic jazz/blues fusion feel. The musicianship on this CD is amazing. Layne Staley had one of the most amazing voices of his generation. He could bend it around notes with relative ease and sing in any style (straight-up rock "Man in the Box" to ballads "River of Deceit" to Blues "Artificial Red"). It's too bad he couldn't overcome his demons. Mike McCready is a superb guitarist and it's easy to see why Pearl Jam's guitar heavy songs do so well. As far as The Doors are concerned, I grew up in that time period and the only Doors song that comes close to something on this CD in sound is "Riders on the Storm" (and that's not really that close). This is a once in a lifetime CD and any fan of any of these musicians should run out and get it. It is nice to see them stretch and try different styles of music. Yes, the lyrics are somewhat depressing at times and some of the songs sound similar, but this was written around the time that Layne went through his first stint with rehab and the lyrics seem to reflect that. The more I listent to it, the more I love it and the more I am saddened that this will be the only collaboration between them.

How could this lineup ever be considered musical hacks by today's standards? Mike McCready is one of the best rock guitarists of all time, and the rest of the band keep the music very tight. And of course there's Layne, who possesses an amazing voice. Many of today's bands aren't half as talented as this band.

This is one of my favorite CDs in my collection (I'm at around 850+ right now...yes, I know: disgusting). It truly was a great blending of styles (even if the overall result was primarily grunge).
I guess I'll hold off on reviewing this one for a while...to do so now would probably be too much of a pure echo of your own review! After a few more months of spins, maybe I'll come back and take a shot at it.
Great review.

I totally forgot about this one. I should smack myself up and down for that--this is one of the coolest CDs out there. I lost it somewhere along the way.....Half.com, here I come.
Great review, and thanks for reminding me of this disc. :-)
