| MGreen8's Full Review: Jennifer Weiner - Good In Bed |
Meet Cannie Shapiro. Fun, quick-witted and eager young woman. Oh, did I mention that her ex-boyfriend has just written about loving a "larger woman" named "C." in a national magazine? Yes, that's right. Cannie Shapiro is a size 16 and now the entire country knows her sexual preferences and how broad her shoulders are. Welcome to her world.
We meet Cannie just as she learns of her ex, Bruce, publishing his article in Moxie Magazine. It's bad enough that Cannie herself is a struggling writer with obnoxious co-workers, but to see Bruce published and with an article about her is too much for Cannie to bare. Mortified Cannie begins to think about her weight and convinces herself that if she were thin Bruce would love her again. Jennifer Weiner has created a life-like and likeable character in Cannie. The reader learns about Cannie's childhood with the absentee father and we begin to feel her pain and really care what happens to her. Along with her father we meet her recently lesbianized mother, her rebellious sister and Cannie's withdrawn brother. The characters in the novel are not one-dimensional stereotypes that one sometimes finds in novels. These characters are developed so well that you can actually picture them as real people. Tanya, the mother's girlfriend, is described so well that I could hear her husky voice in my head.
As Cannie battles with her self-image and feelings of abandonment she enters a study for people wanting to lose weight. While in this program Cannie finds out that she's pregnant with Bruce's child. The result of a night spent together in sadness after Bruce's father passed away. After writing to Bruce, who has since found a new girlfriend, Cannie never hears from him again.
Slowly we watch as Cannie begins to spiral out of control. But then -- LUCK! Cannie meets 2 people who change her life forever. She is forced to look into her past and deal with the fact that her father left her -- never to return. She must deal with Bruce's lack of response to the news that he will soon be a father. Through it all we see Cannie struggle with issues that we've all faced - big or small.
While the novel has moments that are unbelievable (once you've read it you'll know what I mean), it is nonetheless, entertaining. It's an easy book to read and it's fun to read. This book is perfect for a vacation, a beach day or just lounging around the house. It reminded me of Jemima J, Bridget Jones and Patty Jane's House of Curl. Go ahead and buy the soft-cover book for $8 and take some time to relax and get to know Cannie Shapiro.
