The Bottom Line Make sure it is 100% and find out what type of tequila you prefer. Some specific recommendations I make are Paradiso, Herradura blanco suave and Casa Noble.

To choose a good tequila first of all make sure it is 100% blue agave from there are many variations depending on what you want. Some people prefer the pureness of a white tequila some will want to experience the complexity of a Reposado or Anejo tequila others depending on their mood they will select what they want.

So when you are at a store or a bar first look at the label of the tequila you are planning to buy or drink, it should say “100% de agave” or “100% puro de agave”, this means that it is made with sugars which come only from this plant. Other things you should look for are the initials CRT which mean that the Counsel that regulates tequila has supervised the production of that tequila, the legend Product of Mexico and better yet if it says bottled in Mexico or something in this order, finally on this label it has to say what type of tequila it is, silver, gold, reposado and anejo.

Silver (blanco) tequila is normally a bit more harsh but not necessarily in higher quality tequilas, you can get exquisite silver tequilas like Herradura blanco suave or better yet Casa Noble Crystal or Tesoro. A good blanco should be very aromatic, smooth with strong notes of agave with combinations of floral, citrus or others depending on the agave and production method. It should also have a nice thick texture and should be very clear, transparent almost luminescent.

Gold I personally prefer to mix and recommend you do the same, it is basically a silver tequila that has been aged for a short period of time. It has the basic properties of the blanco with the added flavour given by the short period it has been in the barrels, which gives a sweeter taste maybe of vanilla or cinnamon but without the complex taste of wood that is given by the tannins after a long period of aging. Mixing a gold is good in every sense, because of its characteristics it combines well with almost anything and it is less expensive than a reposado or anejo so you don’t feel you are missing the great experience by mixing.

Reposado, a preferred category for most tequila drinkers which also make it a large category with to many options. Here you should look for a good tequila since reposados are aged for a longer time and are a much more complex spirit which you should try by itself. Never shoot this tequila please, serve it in a small snifter and sip. Here the top choices I would suggest are Casa Noble and Tesoro again since they are my favorites and also Patron.

Anejo, the most sophisticated of tequilas, a good anejo has the complexity of a great cognac but of course with basic characteristics of this spirit. Anejo should be balanced, complex which means it should have a great deal of notes but blending together, it should not be overpowering in wood taste. Some will say that Seleccion Suprema or Reserva de la Familia are the best but in my personal opinion they are to strong in their quest to age them and make them taste like oak. Here I will go again with Casa Noble anejo a superb well balanced tequila Paradiso from the same family as Tesoro, both with well polished tannins.

So with this I give you my very personal views on choosing tequila and also a couple of recommendations with which you can start.
