Columbia House

Written: Jan 18 '01 (Updated Jan 18 '01)
Pros:The club has worked for me.
Cons:Don't forget to respond to the monthly mailing.
The Bottom Line: S&H charges are a little high, but if you add it all up you should still come out ahead.

We have been members with Columbia House CD/Cassette & VHS format movies club for years now. So when Columbia House started a DVD club a little over a year ago we joined that as well. I would recommend this club to anyone wishing to get a jump-start on creating a movie or CD library.

They have a great selection in stock that you can access online or through the monthly catalog you receive in the mail, I've found it much easier to browse online myself. Currently (01/18/01) the club offers two options to join, first offer is purchase 3 DVD's @ .49 each plus $1.99 shipping, then you must buy 4 titles over the next 2 years (currently the average DVD is 19.95). Second option is; purchase 3 @ .49 each plus shipping and then purchase a third DVD for $14.95 and you will then need only to buy 3 at regular club price over the next two years. Either way you are saving money.

Some people have had their problems with Columbia House as well as other clubs of this type but for me the experience has been a good one thus far. The majority of the problems most people have had (including myself) was remembering to return those pesky little cards each month. Nowadays however you can just log onto the site and make your selection for the month or request nothing to be sent at all and save that valuable stamp. If for some reason you forget to do either just mark return to sender on the UN-OPENED package when it arrives. My problem is fighting the temptation to see what's inside (if opened carefully however it's nothing a hot glue gun can't fix). If you should ever need to contact customer service I have found it to be very accessible to me online and via the telephone. The only problem I've ever really had (that was not my fault) was when I received a duplicate shipment. But that's only one strike in close to 5 years of service.
