The Tournament Lives

Written: Jan 18 '01 (Updated Jan 18 '01)
Pros:Graphics, Sound, AI, Replayability,everything else
Cons:Can get tedious if played in long spans
The Bottom Line: The bottom line is, this game is a great buy for any fan of the genre. Quake III better watch its back, UT isn't far behind it.

Well, after a very good Christmas I came off with a new 800 mhz computer with 128 mb of ram. Which, needless to say, is pretty good for playing games. Anyways, I also received several games, not the least of which was Unreal Tournament. just to start of my review...This game is awesome.

Well, I guess I'll go ahead and start with the topic usually on every casual player's mind. Graphics. Unreal Tournament has it in spades. With full support for most graphic cards, Unreal Tournament puts its 3d engine through a workout. With bullet effect, particle bursts, and ultra high-res player models, UT surpasses just about every game of its kind, with obvious exceptions.

UT doesn't skimp when it comes to sound either. Boasting support for 3d sound as well as very nice two-speaker systems. Every sound helps to immerse you in the game, whether it be bullets flying around you or a rocket launcher firing. Your teammates use a detailed comm system to contact you and other plays with orders and important information. You also have the ability to be active commander, sending them basic orders. Each voice is crisp and easy to understand, but I would've liked more than two voices for each gender and at least two for each species but I'm just nitpicking now.

Now the thing that hardcore gamers look for, gameplay. I'd have to say UT is absolutely a blast in short one to two hours periods of single player, and a good five or six hour game online. You can't exactly expect much depth from a deathmatch shooter, but the game is huge. The game also caters to every player's taste. UT includes the more traditional Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and CTF modes as well as two additional diverse modes. The deathmatch and team deathmatch games are a blast both with bots and humans, while the CTF mode is better played online.

The two new game modes include Domination, where each team must take over strategic spots on the maps and control them, and my favorite mode, Assault, pits one team on a raid mission on the other team's base. Both modes are a blast both online and off.

Admittedly, to get the most out of UT, I'd expect a system not too far under mine. The game runs pretty badly on a 450 in comparison to high speeds, so i'd recommend around a 600 or higher. It also depends on your 3D accelerator card. By the way, ignore the box, it's a waste of your money to play this in software mode. Save up some money, get a 3D accelerator, then get UT.

So, overall, is it worth it? Yes. I'd have to say the game is definately worth the price, and will keep you glued to your computer for at least a couple of weeks. It's a great deathmatch shooter, both online and off. so if you like shooters in this genre, you don't have an excuse not to buy this game.
