Protect your computer from this program

Written: Jan 18 '01 (Updated Jan 18 '01)
Pros:So thorough, it stopped me from loading a Barbra Streisand fansite.
Cons:I can't launch my browser
The Bottom Line: Not worth the buy even if it is free. It's just something that's more detrimental than the problem

As a college student living in the dorms, one of the perks of living there is the hyper-fast T3 connection. But it also means that your computer is online ALL the time, exposing you to a lot of risks. So when I started school this last quarter I decided to get myself Norton Internet Security 2001 from outpost.com (at a special low student price for that matter). It was actually bundled with the anti-virus 2001.

It was a fairly easy install though I don't know the many technical terms about internet TCP/IP, firewalls, and protocols and on and on. So as an advice, when i doubt, click Next. After you install this program, be prepared to be treated like a kid at boarding school. This baby is restrictively paranoiac. Your browsing experience becomes an exercise in frustration as many webpages aren't allowed to load. Those that do load, the browser because of the program, attacks you with script error messages again and again. Submitting web forms becomes next to impossible which impairs your ability to online shop. Loading java applets is also restricted. I assure you that my browser never had problems until I ran NIS. My computer also gets drained of resources. The program's help windows are no aid at all, it's a minefield of geek jargon.
Trust me, you'd be better off without NIS (and left with more money too). Your browser (mine is IE 5.5) has more than adequate safeguard against online malice. Make your risk virtually non-existent by turning off your computer when not in use.
