Moocher and proud of it

The Bottom Line Newspapers are not old news. Online sites gives a broader and more thorough view.

News sites on the web is probably the greatest use of the promise of the internet as a tool of getting information.

If you live in a one-newspaper town like I am (Los Angeles), I think you know that you are not getting all the news you need to know. By limiting your source of information to one outlet, you run the risk of sacrificing accuracy and fairness in your news stories. The Los Angeles Times is a pretty good newspaper but it can only cover so much and which in fact, after browsing dozens of news sites, really not much at all.

LAtimes.com gives a New Yorker insight on California as the NYtimes.com gives an Angeleno a truck-load of biased reporting. But you need not restrict yourself to two place. During the Election Crisis, the best source of news was from Florida's newspaper websites such as herald.com. And you can get the news quick instead of waiting the next day when the politicians spinned the story to irrelevancy.
It was also during this crisis where the web just wallopped the papers. Partisan sites such as nationalreview.com, slate.msn.com, newsmax.com and salon.com gave the election crisis a perpective not found anywhere else. They also tend to unearth stories not covered by the wires or the papers. These news sites were my daily fix throughout the debacle.

But hey, America ain't the only nation. Sometimes even the rest of the world has an opinion. Do you know who much money you'll be saving by not subscribing to the London Times? Le Monde? Sydney Morning Herald? Yet all of the content of their papers are in their websites. Sydney Morning Herald's Olympic reports made the tape-delayed NBC broadcasts just laughable, I felt like a psychic watching NBC thanks to smh.com.au.

And does all this free content affect whether I want to subscribe or not? Yes. I was dissuaded from subscribing to National Review because the site is all I need. However, and I hope news sites don't read this, I subscribed recently to NAtional Geographic's Traveler because the site seduced me with a promise of great content while never revealing anything. And it worked. Just a peek was enough.

I recommend the newsites for content, price, and convenience. Save yourself trouble and just click.
