Junk

  • User Rating: Disappointing
  • Ease of Use:
Pros:I'd be lying if I gave you any.
Cons:Washed out colors, unfixable geometry problems, hard to read text.
The Bottom Line: Stay away from this monitor at all costs unless you get it for free. For a budget priced flat screen 19" monitor try the KDS XF-9p or XF-9e.

I knew I was in trouble with this monitor when I read in the setup guide that the monitor should face east. So lets see........I need to rearrange my room so that my monitor will work correctly. The truth is that it doesn't matter what direction this monitor is pointing in because it's total junk! First of all, the colors are totally washed out,and the only way to get a halfway decent picture is to turn the brightness almost all the way down, and the contrast most of the way up. Even with the brightness almost off you still need a pair of RayBans to look at this thing. I'm using a Viper V770 ultra video card with 32 meg which works fine with other monitors besides this one. I used the bundled software that came with this monitor, and didn't notice any difference.

Text is another problem, especially over a white background. It appears to be gray instead of black, and therefore very difficult to read. If you plan on using this for some heavy word processing, keep the Tylenol handy.

But the most annoying aspect of this monitor (to me anyway)is the inability to get straight horizontal, or vertical lines. I have adjusted all the controls every which way possible, and to no avail. The problem is that the display isn't flat, only the thick piece of glass over it is. So if you've got a wavy display to begin with, it doesnt matter what kind of glass you put over it. Horizontal lines especially have so many waves in them, it's enough to make you seasick. If you're going to do spreadsheets, or use Excel, you won't be a happy camper for sure.

And there is very noticeable creeping in on the lower left corner that no amount of adjusting can fix.I tried using the trapezoid adjustment to push it out, but in doing so the top left corner would creep in. There simply was no way to fix it.

It is virtually impossible to get straight edges, or straight lines with this thing, and isn't that what you buy a flat screen monitor for in the first place? I have gone to other websites to read reviews on this monitor, and all of the negative ones that I have read have reported the exact same problems that I've had. Some people have contacted Samsung's tech. support ( I did not) and were told that these problems are inherent in the design. Who designs monitors with washed out colors, and wavy lines? Apparently Samsung does. Those people who sent their units back for replacement found that the new units performed just as bad, or worse than their original units. Doesn't say much for their quality control now does it? The bottom line is, as monitors go, this makes a great boat anchor.
