| dlstewart's Full Review: Sony SPP A940 900 MHz 1-Line Cordless Phone |
A month ago I won the Sony Cordless Telephone with Answering System (model SPP-A940) as a contest prize!
Before winning this telephone, which regularly lists for $80.00 and sells for about $50.00, I owned a cordless phone with a separate answering machine. The Sony SPP-A940 combines both features, saving space on the counter. (The phone can be wall-mounted if desired.)
The box contains:
** AC Power Adapter
** Base Unit
** Handset
** Two Telephone Line Cords
** Two Screws with Caps
** Wall Bracket to Mount the Base Unit
** Rechargeable Battery Pack
** Instruction Manual & Quick Start Guide
This Sony phone has a large TALK button and smaller OFF button. The buttons are well spaced. In the month I've owned the telephone, I have not had a problem with accidentally turning it off. The buttons are easy to push; the handset comfortable to hold, though a bit heavy. The handset also gets warm the longer the phone is in use.
It is easy to program Speed Dial numbers. Even though the telephone can hold 10 Speed Dial numbers, there are no convenient preselected buttons for fire, police or medical emergencies. The sound on this telephone is excellent -- no static or fuzzy voices. I haven't had to change the channel setting yet! The sound is so clear that I could easily imagine I talked with someone only a room away.
The answering machine has a digital readout that shows a zero when there are no messages. The machine can record 18 minutes worth of messages before running out of memory. Just hit the PLAY/STOP button to retrieve the messages, and if necessary, it is easy to repeat or skip over messages.
Two prerecorded answering machine messages come with the telephone, so you don't need to record a message. This is a great privacy/security feature. Though I haven't used it, the phone can be programmed with a security code and messages retrieved from outside the home.
The one thing I don't like about this phone is how messages that have been listened to are stored. Once a message has been listened to, the digital readout returns to zero, indicating there are no new messages on the phone. There is nothing to show that there are messages being held in memory, and with only 18 minutes of message space, it is important to know what is in memory so that space limitations are not exceeded. To hear the messages in memory, press the PLAY/STOP button. To eliminate the messages, you have to press the ERASE button. Otherwise, the messages listened to are automatically stored in the memory.
Would I buy this phone if I hadn't won it in a contest? I always do a lot of research before purchasing a product, so it's hard for me to say whether I would have chosen this particular model. The handset is a little heavier than I would prefer. However, with the exceptional sound and built-in answering machine, this phone is a wonderful space-saving convenience. I'm glad I won it in the contest!
Below is a detailed listing of the phone's features and specifications. I hope you have found this review useful.
Enjoy your day!

Update (March 3, 2005)
I'm still using this phone and am happy with it. The sound is still crystal clear ... and I have never had to change the channel. Sometimes I take the phone into the yard with me, and I receive a strong signal. I've become accustomed to the heavier handset, but it does become warm if I'm on the phone for awhile. Overall, though, this is a great phone.
