HTM1 defines the notion of center channel

Pros:Presence, coherence of sound stage.
Cons:May appear too large to some sensibilities.
The Bottom Line: Prior to this speaker, most center channel units are simply incapable of the presence and impact due to their limited size.

There is no reason to repeat what the previous reviewer has stated in terms of pragmatic detail, so I won't!

The HTM1 establishes a new baseline insofar as defining how important is the use of a properly sized center channel. Far too many systems utilize small or smallish units which result in diminished presence, dialog localization and overall realism.

The HTM1 acoustically mates with the Nautilus line, in my case a pair of Nautilus 804s by virtue of using the same mid range and tweeter. The issue of having the same drivers across the front is well documented. The HTM1 is a departure from this line in that it is NOT a vented system, which is probably a design decision.

The real issue is the size of the drivers and how the net result of having a seriously large midrange presence in a center channel results in ultra realism in 5:1 let alone simple Dolby Surround. This speaker is in your face, with the presence, shuffling of near field objects and nuances of speech which are lacking or at least suppressed with smaller drivers.

I lived with a B&W CC6 for over a year and enjoyed it in a smaller room. The HTM1 tilts the scales at 46 pounds/21kg. This is a substantially large center channel compared to the CC6 at 14 pounds/6.3kg.

It is hard to depict the difference a properly sized center can make but I go on record as having been very much in the dark prior to auditioning this scale of unit. I purchased it after a few hours of listening without hesitation.

The HTM1 uses essentially the same drivers as the 804 mains, so it also requires a pretty long break-in period. It was amusing to hear how out of whack the speaker sounded fresh out of the box. It reminded me of how I feel when first arising in the morning versus after a long bike ride later in the day. I noticed a smoothing out after maybe ten hours but it is still working out the electro-mechanical kinks and I am patient.

In summary I very much enjoy having this unit mated to my 804s. It is not inexpensive so others may wish to find alternatives. The perspective I offer is to oversize your concept of center channel, regardless of brand, and leave the popular 2 x 4" or 5" driver units out of the equation. They simply are not capable of delivering the degree of impact of larger cones. How can they unless used in very small rooms?

Stunning is one word with which I close.

regards,

patrick
