Important: Please make sure to read my update below.
I have shopped from Johnny's Selected Seeds catalog for years and have never had a problem. The same is true of ordering through their website, and they never share your e-mail address or information with others unless you give them permission. Johnny's has been in business since 1973 and is named after Johnny Appleseed, probably America's most well-known early seed disperser.

When you first go to Johnny's website, you are offered two choices: Home Gardeners or Market Growers. Under "Home Gardeners" click on "Home Garden Site" to view their catalog. Along the top of the webpage, you then have the choices of: Vegetable Seed, Flower Seed, Herb Seed, Cover Crop & Farm Seed, Garden Accessories. They also offer selections of: Organic Products, Heirloom Seeds, Specials, Closeouts, Gift Ideas. It is easy to navigate the site, and if needed, the site has a search feature that searches by "term" or "item number". They welcome customer feedback should you have suggestions or wish share your thoughts.
With the click of a button, you can request a catalog be mailed to you. Other features include:
** Seed/Acre Calculator
** USDA Zone Map
** Gift Certificate Information
** Farm Tour Schedule
** Map and Directions to Johnny's Selected Seeds
** News about products, weather, etc.
** Links to other Garden websites
** Job Opportunities within Johnny's Selected Seeds
Johnny's offers approximately 1200 varieties of seed and is part of the "Safe Seed Pledge". They do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered plants or seeds.
One of the special features of Johnny's Selected Seeds is that they offer a broad variety of seeds that grow well in Northeastern climates. With a shorter growing season in Northeastern areas, it's important to find plant varieties that have a quicker mature rate. Johnny's Selected Seeds is located in Albion, Maine.
When I have a question about products, I phone Johnny's customer service phone number (they do not have a toll-free number) and have spoken with courteous, friendly, knowledgeable people. It felt as if I were talking with a well-liked neighbor. Johnny's is one of the few remaining privately owned and operated seed companies. Their down-home honesty and good humor is refreshing and welcome.
Johnny's also donates 10% of their profit to local or gardening charities. They take credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express -- or pay via check or money order), and have a posted notice that their website is secure for online credit card transactions.
Update -- March 1, 2007
I think it is important to mention the letter I received today from Johnny's Selected Seeds. Here is a brief part of the letter, "... an unauthorized person, from outside Johnny's, broke into our website and stole data." Apparently my personal information, including my credit card number, was mined from Johnny's website. Naturally I have canceled the credit card. What I did not realize was that Johnny's held onto my credit card information after I placed my seed order. I did not set up an account with them, which is optional.
I will still order from Johnny's in the future, but I will not give them my credit card information. Johnny's is an excellent company to buy seeds from. However, after this incident, I'm leery about handing them my credit card.
I hope you found this review useful.
Enjoy your day!
