The Bottom Line Reading to your child cultivates a love of books and reading. Plus it provides a great way of bonding with him/her.
Since my husband and I both love books and reading, it's really no surprise that we wanted to cultivate this same love in our children. I began collecting children's books before my daughter was born and started reading to her when she was just a few weeks old. Her dad and grandparents read to her, too. We started with the soft books and progressed to others. We received a free copy "The Foot Book" in the mail, and that book is still one of her favorite books. Reading was (and still is) a special time for us. We would sit in a rocking chair together while I read one or more books. I have very fond memories of those days, rocking and reading. We read almost daily to her before she started school, and she began to develop her list of favorite authors (including Frank Asch and Dr. Seuss) and favorite books. I bought the Bob Books by Scholastic to help her begin reading when she was about four. Words can't explain how excited she was when they finally started teaching reading in Kindergarten. Even though she is now reading to us every night as part of her homework, she still craves being read to. She loves books and the challenge of reading harder books. In fact, she has already begun a nice collection of chapter books to read independently in a few years! |
