| soosool's Full Review: Epson Stylus Photo 820 Inkjet Printer |
This is a great printer. I have had an old Epson Stylus color 600 for the past 6 years. Recently I purchased a digital camera and soon realized that my old printer is simply not good enough to take full advantage of my digital photos. That is when I decide it was time to buy a new printer. I use a laser printer for my text and usual printing needs and I therefore I set out to find a photo printer.
I looked at Canon, Epson and HP products out there. I have to say I was extremely impressed by the quality of photos printed on higher end Canon printers (i.e. Canon S820, S900). However I was not at all impressed by the price. I also looked at HP and was not satisfied by their quality and technology. Then while looking at Epson's web page I saw a $50 rebate on the Epson Photo 820 and decided that I needed to see the quality first hand. I headed for the nearest Fry's and checked out the printer for my-self. I liked the quality and I liked the price.
The printer was tagged for $99.00 due to an apparent recent price reduction and with $50 rebate you could not beat it. So I bought it.
Package
The box included the printer (naturally), one black and one color ink cartridge. No cable. Also Epson had very graciously included a packet containing 10-15 pages of high quality Epson glossy photo paper (thanks Epson).
Set up
Set up was as easy as can be. All I had to do was to plug it in to my computer, load the accompanying CD and boom that was it. Worked like a charm. No problems.
Software
The driver has many adjustments and it will take a few prints before you get used to different adjustments and what they are for. But I did not find this a major issue since every time you buy some thing it takes some time to get used to it.
Photos
Simply, excellent. I have managed to impress every body in my family and friends.
Running Costs
Granted, the printer uses a lot of ink to produce the dazzling pictures it creates. Also chances are that the photos printed at home are more expensive than photos produced by labs and conventional cameras and films. But consider this, you can print the photos you want and not print the ones you don’t want. You can print them at any time and in any size. No waiting. To me these attributes makes printing at home worth while and then some.
