The Bottom Line Each couple is going to have different songs that mean the most to them. For me, not only is the music important, but also the message in the song.
Finally, after a long day at work, he arrives home, his body and mind tired and worn. As he steps across the threshold of his home, he notices something different. The usually bright light of the entrance way has been replaced by the soft glow of candlelight. He moves towards the source of this light, moving from one room to another, until finally he is in the lounge room. He notices that the illumination comes from 40 candles, flickering from various places in the room. In the centre of the room, he notices a blanket laid on the carpet. Atop this blanket sits his wife, surrounded by an enticing picnic style dinner. As he sits beside her, his wife hits “play” on the stereo’s remote control, and as she starts to remove his shoes, soft music fills the room: ”When You Come” - Crowded House (Temple Of Low Men) ”When you come Across the sea Me like a beacon, Guiding you to safety The sooner the better now” This beautiful song, complete with moving lyrics, is a memorial to love, to the power of love. The song shows grace, and in its gentleness, has a power, deeply moving to the listener. For me, this song is significant for I had to travel far to find my husband, the one I was meant to be with. ”Into The Night” - Benny Mardones (Benny Mardones) While this song may be about unforbidden love, it’s melody is soft. Yet this song has a unique intensity, provided by the vocals of Benny Mardones. As with the previous inclusion, this song speaks of the power of love, the everlasting quality of love. ”Words Are Not Enough” - Jon English (Greatest Hits) ”Words are not enough To show the way I feel about you Those at times it might be tough Know that I, I will always want you” This song sums up how many of us feel about love, or more importantly, trying to put the feelings and depth of love into words. In expression just how difficult love is to surmise through words, Jon English, an Australian artist, beautifully portrays the power of love. ”Message To My Girl” - Split Enz (EnzSo version) With lyrics such as “I don’t want to say I love you, that would give away too much”, this song demonstrates the innocence of love, especially new love. The original version of this song, performed by Split Enz is slow, melodic and moving. However, the symphonic version performed included on the album EnzSo is even more powerful, more intense. ”Six Ribbons” - Jon English (Greatest Hits) This song was the theme to a mini-series shown on Australian television in either the late ‘70’s or the early ‘80’s. It told the story of the first English settlers in Australia, shown through the eyes of the character played by the versatile Jon English, a convict who, after spending seven years as a slave to a rich land owner, was given his own land. This beautiful song, full of Irish sounds, demonstrates his love for a female convict who he married later in the series. It speaks of not being able to offer her material possessions, so instead, he gives her “six ribbons, to tie back her hair”. ”Love Song” - AC/DC (High Voltage - Australian Release, 1975) While some may have described the earlier songs of AC/DC, those with Bon Scott on lead vocals, as being seductive, and at times, erotic, less people would consider their music as being romantic. However, their 1975 release, Love Song is a detour from their usual musical style. Perhaps the fact that the band rarely released songs that could be considered love songs or ballads lends to this song sounding so sincere, so meaningful. ”All I Want Is You” - U2 (Rattle And Hum) This song is a beautiful declaration of love. It is slow, graceful, yet powerful in its message. It is a song sung with conviction, with meaning. ”Throw Your Arms Around Me” - Hunters & Collectors (Under One Roof) ”I will come for you at nighttime I will raise you from your sleep I will kiss you in four places I’ll go running along your street I will squeeze the life out of you You will make me laugh and make me cry You will forget it You will make me call your name And I’ll shout it to the blue summer sky This song has a beautiful intensity, not only in the slow and melodic tune itself, but also through the powerful words of love and passion. ”I Belong To You” - Lenny Kravitz (Five) Although I am not typically a fan of Lenny Kravitz, this is one song that I find to have a beautiful sound, as well as powerful, meaningful and sincere lyrics. Again, it is a declaration of love for the other person. ”Fall At Your Feet” - Crowded House (Woodface) While this song does have a beautiful, melodic tune, its strength lays in its moving lyrics. These lyrics, reading almost as a poem, are sensual, almost depicting the act of seduction. Even so, there is almost an innocence that can be felt through this song. ”By My Side” - INXS (X) This is one of the slower songs by this Australian group. The song starts slow, becoming more intense as the song progresses. It is another declaration of love, of love for all time. ”Feeling Love” - Paula Cole (City Of Angels Soundtrack) This song leaves very little to the imagination as to the intentions of the song writer. It is very seductive, evoking sensual images. The music itself evokes images of a woman, slinking her way to the object of her desire, her heart set on the act of seduction. As the music concludes, he mouths two words to his wife. A simple “thank you” |
